  • Play a bit less video games, focus harder on skateboarding and learn guitar earlier (started when I was 11).

    Once I hit high school, I'd focus more so I could go to school at the end for electrical engineering. Once graduated, I'd start building amps and pedals for guitar and bass.

    Think of why The Office is revered as a comedy show despite its racially/sexually charged jokes. The reason it works is because Michael is the butt of the joke pretty much every time. Even if the joke is really pushing boundaries, its never the race or sex that is the true root of the comedy, its the cringe idiocy of the character instead.

    My wife once purposely ripped a huge fart in a passport office line with well over 100 people in it because she was bored. I was mortified but because she was the literal butt of the joke it was funny at the same time. Embarrassment was at an all-time high but it wasn't because all eyes were on me.

  • The bridge is 4.3 miles. Average riding speed for a 30-35 year old rider is 20.8 mph according to Strava data. Let's say its 15mph instead.

    That's a 28 minute ride at below average speed; 20 minutes at average.

    That is not too long, as clearly evidenced by the people that use the bike lane.

  • If their time is so valuable, maybe they should ride a bike instead of trapping themselves in traffic?

    The average American commute is 41 miles round trip. I guarantee you that a large number of people stuck on that bridge every day have a much shorter commute, could ride a bike instead, and would actually spend less of their time commuting by doing so.

    Those are the people you should be angry with because they're the ones that are directly wasting your time with their frivolous driving trips. The more we get people riding bikes, the less problems those that are required to drive will experience.

    Also, maybe if the average American car wasn't a wasteful hulking behemoth there would be more room for more people on the roads. 🤷

  • I think calling it an island is doing it a disservice. It's not visible as any collective mass of anything. It's a diffuse mess of micro and macroscopic plastic spread across a truly massive area. Its essentially invisible from the surface.

    You call it an island and the first thing people will want to see is images or video of this island. When they find out it doesn't exist as described it makes them think the issue is overblown.

  • I thought the same about abstract art until I saw that one painting in the movie Ex Machina. For some reason in that context it just evoked feelings of dread more than almost any other scene in the movie. And it's an almost static shot just staring at this one abstract painting. It was really interesting and totally changed my mind on abstract art.
