  • Nice to see a new game, but I don't see what it adds compared to cluesbysam. Did the tutorial and today's puzzle and it seems like there were a few mistakes.

  • Same as most of the other commentors, this isn't something I've noticed. But that doesn't mean it doesn't happen, so it would be helpful to hear some examples. I feel like most of the time people here are pretty supportive / helpful, but maybe I've got a skewed perspective?

  • I think a lot of people just didn't understand the context. It maybe says something about the people I interact with regularly, but I haven't heard a sexist / racist / uncomfortable joke in person for years. Once I stopped hanging out with teenagers, it pretty much took care of itself.

Understanding the context, and knowing that lots of people have to spend time with assholes, i think it's good advice. But it isn't that surprising that, without any context, lots of people don't assume she's talking about a specific type of problematic joke, sincs there's not really anything in the text to suggest that. In which case it's pretty sociopathic advice.

  • Various freelance / project based work would probably come close. I know that jobs with short deadlines and big changes of focus have been manageable, while I've never lasted long with regular week after week of ongoing or repetitive tasks. Stuff like theatre / arts projects, or even some types of construction involves working really hard for a couple of weeks until something is achieved, and then doing something different.

My current job teaching at a university almost hits the sweet spot, because I only ever work six weeks before some sort of holiday, and there's big vacations in between semesters. But coordiating the same class over a 12 week semester, even with a half term week off in the middle, is a big challenge to my willpower. About halfway through I start to check out and everything starts to fall apart.

  • Those are really intresting studies. It's quite something to think about my cycle of getting bored and starting a new hobby or trying something different as an essential life skill of a nomadic forager. Not like those slow, obsessive types, who lag behind trying to pick a bush to the bone before moving on.

In the nomadic tribe, those with the mutation had better social standing and nourishment. In the sedentary tribe, those with the same mutation were malnourished, distracted, and regarded as unreliable by their peers.

This is pretty depressing, and believable.

  • I always put a spoonful of crunchy peanut butter in my instant noodles (along with some extra spices). Makes the texture creamier, but with some crunch, and gives a kinda satay vibe.

  • You might have an intresting point here, but o don't really understand what you're saying. Can you explain a bit more?

  • It's hard! And tbh, when I do manage to stick at a hobby for a longer time it often starts to horrify me. Like, why I have I spent so long doing this thing that doesn't matter?

    But tips that help me:

Keeping stimulated about it, watching YouTube about it, reading about it. It's easy to do when I'm excited about it, and that way I'm constantly being bombarded with reminders that I care.

Having friends or people to join in with. If I have to go to something or finish something, having another person to keep me on track and from just moving on to something else is great

Setting manageable goals - I often go back and forth from "I want this to be my whole life" and "why am I'm wasting my life on this". Aiming for a specific goal means there's a point that I can choose to stop or set a further goal, rather than just a vague endless pressure to do the hobby.

But it really depends on what it is, specific advice for crafting, sport, games or whatever will be different. What do you want to do? And what about it excites you?

  • There's lots of dry / tart option, especially if you like tonic water and that dry quinine taste. Add a dash of citrus or bitters and it's not much more trouble than a beer. There's also some intresting non alcoholic herbal 'spirits' that bring complex (and often dry / bitter) flavours, and could be used to make something nice with tonic or plain soda water.

  • I love old, heavy furniture, and have managed to aquire a lot of nice stuff for free at house clearances by being willing to turn up with a trailer and take something off their hands. I love how it looks, and it really suits our old farmhouse vibe.

But it can be pretty damn annoying to use. Drawers that are a struggle, inefficiently large spaces, and it's dark and akward to find things in. Sometimes I think about being old and having to downsize, and how I'll live in a nice bungalow with a fitted kitchen and have closets with lights and spinney gadgets and shit. But til then I'm going to man up and continue wrestling with solid wood armoires.

  • I think she has the earing on, they're just small studs and it's hidden by her hair in that panel.

But who knows, maybe she was taking one out? Maybe because she doesn't want to wear too many accessories to dinner?

    1. Putting in an earing?
  • Can you share a link?

  • Weird. I'm on 145.0.1 (Build #2016126887), I even tried going to arstechnica.com in case it only happened on certain websites, but the urls Firefox shares to whatsapp are totally normal for me. Some sort of A/B testing?

  • Yup, just read the other post. No one picked stupid cat. Really weird behavior OP.

Edit: also, reading the reponses here, people don't care or pick smart cat. Just like in the other post..

  • The Hissing of Summer Lawns by Joni Mitchell. I like JM well enough, but don't really listen to many other albums of hers. But HoSL just has this unique vibe that keeps bringing me back, especially on those slightly delirious hot days of summer.

  • Just tried sharing to WhatsApp, using the Firefox share button, on android. Link is normal.

  • I don't know what to else to say, the community describes itself as "women only" and he described it as being "female only". You could (but probably shouldn't) take it up with that community if you really feel their "women only" rule excludes girls. But I'm not sure I see how it excludes "ladies" which are generally considered a subset or synonym of "women".

To continue your point, it's true that not every' female' is a woman, indeed not every female is human. You get female seahorses, penguins and even female plants (dioecious ants like asparagus or holly). But for most English speakers, in most situations, female is an adjective and not a noun. So, you might 'have a female friend' , but you're not usually 'friends with a female'.

In my experience, the only linguistic situations where it is common to use female as a noun are 1) in scientific writing "the male mantis is decapitated by the larger female", and even their is usually just to avoid repeating the name of species. Or, 2) within groups of akward men. I'm not sure if they're trying to sound intelligent by aping scientific terminology, or are so removed from regular contact with women that they see them almost as another species.

Obviously it doesn't mean that everyone who talks about 'females' is an incel, but its use is highly linked to people who spend time in communities that don't involve a lot of women. Just as not everyone who uses "bogan" is Australian, but most of them are. Or, have spent a lot of time in Australian-adjacent situations.
