  • Maybe "Dear God," by XTC?

  • Silence

  • I heard that in my head

  • Huh, interesting, hadn't seen that.

  • No joke - my wife and I were eating so much of it for a while that you could smell it on our sweat.

Also, what they say is true: we got zero mosquito bites during that time.

  • Guy I met had a scar like that on the back of his hand. Story was he had four brothers, all big guys. Mom would put the food on the table, but no one was allowed to take anything until they said grace. One night it was steaks, and they weren't all the same size. When grace was done, they all went for a big steak with their forks. He was in first, but his brother ended up stabbing the back of his hand with his.

The fucked up and kind of funny part was that his brother's reaction was to bring the guy's hand over to his own plate by pulling it with his fork, and wiggling it until the steak fell off the fork onto the plate.

  • Oh, it's amazing. Get a head of garlic and rub off all the exterior papery stuff (but not the skin of the individual cloves. Some people also cut the pointy tips off. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast until soft. Get some nice bread, warm bread. Pull off a clove, hold it by the bottom and squeeze it like toothpaste onto a slice of bread. Enjoy the most wonderful garlic bread variant.

  • Weedheads, tramps and thieves, you'd hear it from the the people on the street..

  • Yeah, this is 100 percent true. It doesn't even have to be what you do for a living. I used to really enjoy cooking, but once I got a family and had to cook meals every day, whether I felt like it or not, it became a chore. As chores go, it was still better than most, but it stopped being something I looked forward to.

  • I've never used this kind of thing, but I'm curious why you wouldn't use a typical utility knife, like maybe this kind:

    Or even an x-acto knife:

  • Because it's a very popular, traditional ingredient in a lot of soups. You would have the same problem if you didn't like onions or carrots.

  • I don't care for crunch in soup, but a like the celery flavor. I've added celery seeds to things I don't want actual celery in. I'll make stock with celery, onions, and carrots, and then strain them out.

  • When I was in college, I worked at a junior high, doing noon supervision and stuff. One day I was walking down the hall when a teacher came up with a 13-year-old girl and asked me to take her to the principal's office so her mom could bring her appropriate clothes. The girl was dressed pretty inappropriately for school, for sure, with a very revealing top and booty shorts.

So I take her there and I'm to wait to escort her back. The mom comes, and she's very apologetic. She said her daughter wasn't dressed like that when she left for school, she must have changed in the bathroom. She said she was very sorry and would make sure it didn't happen again, etc.

The thing is, the mom was basically naked, She had on a tiny skirt, a translucent shirt, and no bra. I could tell the principal was completely flustered and was trying to figure out something to say, but eventually just said thank you.

  • Hips on B look wider, so I'll go with that. Not sure what that separation below the rib cage is for.

  • My mom died of Alzheimer's, but she also had bad rheumatoid arthritis and some other stuff. When she just didn't know who we were, it was one thing, but when every day she woke up in pain, had to have her diapers changed by "strangers," couldn't swallow solid food, etc., I just didn't understand why my siblings wanted to keep her on the medication that slowed the progress of the Alzheimer's. I finally had my brother stay with her over a weekend, and afterwards he was like, "Oh, she's having a miserable life, what are we doing?" We stopped the medication soon after, and she died a few months later.

  • I'm an old guy, and have had lots of pet over my life. so I've thought about this a lot.

Years ago I came to the position that the most compassionate thing to do for my pets was to try and assess if their days are more full of joy, or more full of pain and suffering. We can't ask our pets that, we can only do our best to figure it out. If they're spending more time suffering than enjoying their lives, then I think it's a kindness to put them down.

We don't usually have to make that decision for other humans, because they can decide for themselves. Note that we do make the decision sometimes to "pull the plug" on people rather than keep the alive.

Also note that animals do sometimes go off to die when they're sick and miserable. In fact, when dogs and cats have illnesses that are miserable but treatable, we sometimes have to be careful that they don't go off to die before treatment is done.

  • They really do look like USB ports though. You sure they aren't run to a box where a PC would be, and let you plug in a keyboard and mouse?

  • The first account I made on Lemmy was on lemmy.world (same account name), but they had issues with uptime and response time for a while, so I made this one on Lemmy.ca. a nice feature of Lemmy is that you can make accounts on different instances and generally see all the same content (except for federation differences). If nothing else, it's good to have a backup account in case your instance goes down.

  • I came with the mass exodus in the spring of 2023 (used a .world account for a while before making this one). The handling of app developers was just a final straw for me; I had been a pretty prolific commentor, but the experience was getting worse and worse over the years. I started thinking about finding another place after that time Russia disconnected the country from the Internet for a day and Reddit was wonderful. Political discussions were friendly, trolls largely disappeared, and the whole site became much more left-leaning. I hate the feeling of being manipulated.
