  • Agreed. And, sadly, there seem to be fewer and fewer companies that have being good citizens as a priority. We're a long way from google's "Don't be evil" thing, for sure.

  • You know, this isn't far from reality. Many of us have managed IRAs or invest in mutual funds and end up with some of our money where we don't want it, and it's hard to communicate. Are there any mutual funds or whatever that are focused on positive investments, and if so, do they actually grow?

  • I opened this comic but didn't realize I hadn't scrolled all the way down, so the last panel was hidden. I kept rereading it and scanning everything in every panel trying to figure out the joke.

  • Can you imagine how that family must have felt? Awful.

  • To be honest, I didn't even think of anything else. I'd never done the Heimlich, wasn't trained, it just seemed like the thing to try.

  • Funny enough a coworker told me “you’re not supposed to do the heimlich anymore”

Which is funny because in both your story and mine it worked.

  • What did the person you helped say?

  • Oh, wow. What did people do, applaud?

  • We're such weird creatures. That woman was choking to death and she was too shy to ask for help and too embarrassed after to say much of anything.

  • Funny, when I sat back down, my wife just calmly said, "Did you just save that woman's life?" It was weird, we just went back to eating and never really talked about it again except when someone would mention the Heimlich and my wife would tell the story.

  • I had a surreal experience once. I was at a busy, casual restaurant at a booth, sitting across from my wife. There was a lady eating alone at a booth a little way behind my wife, and I noticed she looked kind of distressed - looking around like she was trying to catch a waiter - but she seemed to be getting more panicked looking and her face didn't look right. I got up and went over and said "Are you chocking?" and she looked at me with big eyes and nodded. I asked if she wanted me to try and help and she said yes and stood up. I never learned how to do the Heimlich except from TV shows, but seemed worth a try, so I did what I remembered, and she coughed up a piece of chicken. She looked really embarrassed and said "Thank you." I said I was glad to help and went back to my seat. No one in the place noticed a thing except for my wife.

  • I'm 6'1", and I don't see the top of my fridge in any meaningful way.

  • I remember talking to a woman who was like 6'5". She said when she went to visit other couples, she'd often hear the woman yelp when they realized she could see the tops of the fridge and stuff, where lots of people don't dust.

  • There was a radio show back in the day that did a segment called "What did Jesse Jackson say." They'd play a clip of him talking, then people would call in trying to understand/guess what he said (they used official transcripts as the basis). Sometimes they're go ages with all the guesses being wrong.

  • Yes, though most of them use the chickens that are close to their sell-by date, so not a lot of loss,.

  • Deeply religious folks often believe that if you swear on a bible to tell the truth, then lie, you'll go to hell. If you aren't religious, it means nothing. For others it's a spectrum in between.

  • It's likely for activating voice input, but you didn't give the keyboard app permission to use the mic or something. Usually on keyboard apps there's a key you long press to get to settings, and you might be able to get rid of it there.

  • Makes it sound like it's part of your keyboard app

  • Honestly, I feel the same way. This "he who shall not be named" thing is dumb. If the song is offensive, it's still going to be offensive if you replace it be saying "the N word" or whatever. But I'd also go back to the "know your audience" thing. If there's someone in ear shot who is going to be triggered by a white person singing it, then maybe don't sing it.
