Test-Driving The 2026 Vespa GTS 310 Super Scooter

forbes.com

The 2026 Vespa GTS 310 Super does what Vespa does best - taking a classic machine that’s been turning heads since the Eisenhower administration, then slipping in real mechanical upgrades so it’s not just pretty or stylish —it’s a proper tool to get you around a city quickly. 09_Vespa_GTS_Supersport_310_Blu_Eclettico

Pieaggio What’s new for 2026?

This year brings a bigger 310cc “HPE” single-cylinder replacing the old 300-class setup. It’s also tuned for stronger pickup and a bit more top-end kapow. The newer long-stroke motor is aimed at smoother response and that top speed now “will exceed 80 mph” although you won’t be tempted to go that fast. Looks

It’s got Vespa DNA all over with broad shoulders, that unmistakable “tie” down the legshield, and enough chrome/paint to make it feel like a small moving piece of Italian furniture. The 2026 model brings a plethora of trims and colors—matte/gloss mixes, contrast stitching, carbon-look bits on sportier versions—rather than a full visual reboot.

PROMOTED

2026 is Vespa’s 80th anniversary, so Piaggio’s leaning into special-series vibes, with a big anniversary celebration planned in Rome June 25–28, 2026, and special editions on the GTS platform. The Drive

My two-week long test saw me go and go and go, through neighborhoods and over busy freeways, and it never got old – each journey was like a carnival ride.

MORE FOR YOU

The unit worked best when I had to dash out of the house and get somewhere in 10 minutes on a clear, blue day, rather than aiming at, say, a destination 20 or more miles away. It’s also pretty difficult to fall - your tires are tiny and it’s a far less dangerous toy than a motorcycle in that way. Sure, you'll need some basic equilibrium in your DNA, but based on my test, it's almost impossible to tip your 326-pound two-wheeler over. 15_Vespa_GTS_Supertech_310_Blu_Energico

What’s special about it is the combo of old-school bodywork and modern rider aids. You’re getting dual-channel ABS and ASR traction control, plus conveniences like keyless functions (depending on trim), a USB port, and smartphone connectivity through Vespa MIA on certain models. Depending on your driving habits, you’ll wring about 73.5 MPG out of it – but as you grow more and more comfortable, you’ll feel like giving ‘er the gun more than not.

Enginewise, you’ve got a 310cc liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, 4-valve single engine making 25 hp (18.4 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 28.9 Nm of torque at 5,250 rpm. There’s an updated CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) calibration and hardware to improve fluidity and keep noise down – though some people like noise. 10_Vespa_GTS_Supersport_310_Blu_Eclettico

Piaggio Room for improvement

It’s keyless, which is great, but the unit didn’t ecognize my fob in pants or jacket pockets, so I had to produce it and put it right up against the body to start it. That’s not a deal-breaker, of course, but it got old when moving the scoot in and out of its protected parking spot behind a gate. Also, the below-seat compartment wasn’t big enough for my motorcycle helmet as with some scooters.

As for accessories, including helmet storage? This is Vespa—there’s a whole ecosystem. The big ones buyers care about are top cases/rear racks for abovemntioned storage, windscreens or flyscreens for freeway-ish stints, crash bars, and little factory-style add-ons like USB/compartment pieces and more. Conclusion: the complaints were few, the pleasures were many and for the price of $8,099 for the GTS 310 Super, it’s a relative bargain. For inner-city getting-around, it’s ideal.
