Rather than relying on proprietary models from OpenAI or Google, Lumo uses a mix of open-source foundation models. According to Proton, these currently include Qwen 3.5, GLM 5.2, Image-Turbo and FireRed-Image-Edit-1.1.

Closed-source model from China running on a Chinese system ≠ open-source model from China on a European system though.

As several studies have found, Chinese AI Models Spread Propaganda Globally,

The Estonian Foreign Intelligence Service’s 2026 International Security Report, an audit by the non-profit Policy Genome and a detailed study funded by the Swedish Psychological Defence Agency highlight how leading Chinese models such as DeepSeek, Alibaba’s Qwen family [which is also used by Proton], and Moonshot’s Kimi embed content controls that extend well beyond China’s domestic political sensitivities.

A very good study has also been published in September last year, showing how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) ideological priorities influence user-facing outputs.

The study makes a very insightful read, providing meaningful comparison as identical prompt-based tests were conducted on domestic Chinese AI systems—such as DeepSeek, Doubao, and Ernie Bot—as well as on Western AI models to assess how they handle the same questions.

And these are just 4 out of many more.

Thanks for sharing, no argument there. Non-chinese models on non-chinese systems are far superior when it comes to not spreading Chinese propaganda.

Proton has seen some backlash in general and there is quite some hate out there on ai, and while i agree ai causes some very big problem, still: this does make Lumo relevant to me. Haven’t tried image generation, but web search and file upload seem for me good enough to not use their competitors for that.

This one I use more than Mistral. There aren’t many related services that focus on privacy.
