I, and to this day, if my mind is busy and someone calls out my name, I jump. The volume is generally not a factor, usually. It also can cause me to trip over. However, whenever this happens, it’s usually delayed by around a second.

My theory on this is that my mind is busy, it hears an interruption, and whenever my mind gets hit with it, it gives a brief sensory overwhelming (possibly “snapped into reality”) causing me to be startled, hence a delay.

Growing up, peers have accused me of faking this behaviour for attention or whatever due to the delay. Has anybody else had the same experience?

Lol yes. When someone startles me by being somewhere unexpected I notice them, I go back to what I was doing and then yelp/jump/etc when my brain catches up. It’s awkward as fuck.
