why is the social democrat symbol a hand holding roses? are they laying it on the grave of the communists they help kill?

It’s the promise of a new and better world. You grab onto it, and then you find out it just made you bleed for nothing more than wilted garbage.

More seriously, it’s meant to depict promising a new and beautiful world, and the fist is the standard leftist fist of worker power and solidarity. It was specifically designed for the Socialist Party of France, and the idea was to use a symbol that contrasts against the hammer and sickle of the Communist Party. Then it was picked up by social democrats everywhere, especially in Europe.

Typical for social democrats, their primary concern is trying to tell people “we are not communists”

Social Democrats used to cover all of modern day anti-capitalist forces. Lenin himself wrote of him as a social democrat.

But with time they became ossified, began to enjoy the access to the state as union leaders or elected officials, many also tried to rectify the anti-imperialist slogans with the material benefits enjoyed from exploitation.

Around the First World War, the original leaders of the social democratic movement died and were replaced by right-deviationists, ultimately leading to the break with actual socialists and anti-imperialists.

The symbols they just kept while MLs had to find “new ones”.
