“This is the danger of reading the ceasefire as an event rather than as a phase: it allows the slow violence of fortification, encroachment, and engineered uninhabitability to proceed under the cover of a word that promises its end,” Abdaljawad Omar, an assistant professor at Birzeit university in the West Bank, told Drop Site News.

“This is the whole grammar of settler-colonial space in miniature,” Omar added. “The line is never where the line is said to be. The ‘yellow line,’ like the Green Line before it, like every cartographic fiction Israel has authored, exists in order to be exceeded. It is drawn not to mark a limit but to generate the next transgression of that limit—control of 53% becomes control of 60% becomes the buffer that eats 300 meters more.

    I remember Israel bein so small growing up, shame they can’t remember ww2 and what the Germans did to them, maybe time to relocate the roudy ones back there? Not that I’m saying Hitler’s good, far from it look at the orange dingleberry. Seriously fuck isreal

      I think the reason this feels so incomprehensible is it is a situation orchestrated and supercharged by western colonialism and this current moment is a convergence of many of these forces that have been acting internationally for decades.

      Which doesn’t excuse Israel one bit, but it allows a nuanced conversation instead of the rising rightwing antisemitic response which involves throwing up your hands as someone from the US and saying “The jews betrayed us! We never wanted this!”.

      “Western” nations have a far more vital role in all of this then the centrists of those countries seem equipped to grapple with, which worries me deeply.

      They don’t remember it because it more or less didn’t happen (dw this is not Holocaust denial); Israelis predominantly descend from Middle Eastern Jews and Eastern European Jews. Now both of these groups experienced plenty of persecution in their own right, but still, the Holocaust had nothing to do with Israel. In fact Holocaust survivors that went to Israel were persecuted and had their reparation money stolen.

        You might note that there’s a fair share of countries that have zero or extremely low death toll… please note that amongst them only the UK and Switzerland had a significant Jewish community (0.5% or more of the total population).

        Anyways, you are right that European Jews that actually lived through or fled the actual Holocaust never represented the majority of Jewish Israeli citizens. However they have still made up a significant part of Israeli population.

        Israel had 700k Jewish citizens in 1948. Maybe a third of those had fled Germany and Poland in the thirties and forties. 300k Jews from countries affected by the Holocaust immigrated between 1948 and 1951… more or less the same number of Jews that emigrated from North Africa and the Middle East in that same period.

        And there has been a lot of mingling between the different Jewish people inside Israel. I don’t think it’s the case but I wouldn’t be surprised if a majority, if small, of Jews inside Israel today have some ancestors or relatives who died in the Holocaust. Two thirds of European prewar Jewish population were murdered in the Holocaust.

        It should be noted that Zionism indeed predates the Holocaust. Early adopters of Zionist ideology had largely emigrated to British Palestine before the Holocaust or its onset. They and their descendants have and continue to constitute a large part of the Israeli establishment (ie Netanyahu). Like you say, a lot of them would still have faced intense persecution in Europe before they emigrated, and a lot of them might also have some family or friends that stayed behind and died in the Holocaust. Let’s also note that, at the time, Zionist leaders have shown extreme cynicism if not disdain towards the ongoing Holocaust and the surviving Jewish population (see Tom Segev’s “the Seventh Million”)

        I wasn’t aware of this, makes sense, but I’m not religious nor studied any of them. I am and since a youth atheist, parents tried but, I either freaked out until they had to pick me up. Then religion class later, locked them out of the car when they tried to walk me in.
