The Trump administration has launched a legal attack on the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), raising questions about the future of other nonprofits at odds with the president. The center pleaded not guilty Thursday in an unusual case, one that accuses the SPLC of turning its back on its very mission: using a now-defunct informant program to funnel money to the hate groups like the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) it spent decades fighting. It’s a claim the SPLC strongly denies — one it says is “not even supported by or contained in the indictment itself.” It also has accused prosecutors of misleading the grand jury to gain an indictment. Rep. Jamie Raskin (Md.), the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, sees the prosecution as a new wave in a long line of cases targeting civil society, an effort he said began with law firms and universities.

I don’t know myself! I totally agree with you. Please don’t think I’m criticizing you.

It’s such a powerless feeling. We weren’t meant to be the safety net, our system of checks and balances were supposed to be the protection against this, and we can see how that’s going. I protest, I speak out, I vote, I write my legislators, but I don’t know what else to do.

Everyone can and does armchair quarterback calling all Americans scum or stupid because we’re just sitting and letting it happen. We aren’t, but what are we supposed to do? They are looking for the opportunity to kill us, deport is as citizens, torture us, how do you deal with a fascist dictator? It feels like the only recourse is to exercise our vote, which I understand is impacted.

As soon as 50 people come together with guns, that shit will get shut down REAL fast. What the heck are we supposed to do?

Trust me. I get it. That helplessness is not what I was taught as a kid or reinforced as an adult in college. It’s just frustrating to know that everything you believed in all of your life is a lie and there ain’t shit you can do about it.

And what you wrote makes me sympathize with the Iranians. You say they’ll kill 50 of us. Their government killed 30,000 with no recourse.
