The NSF has been fundamental in helping develop technology used in MRIs, cellphones, and it even helped get Duolingo get off the ground.

    2/3 is pretty good.

But in all seriousness, I keep wondering with stuff like this: Is it more about loyalty? Axing existing institution in order to replace it with one that is more loyal? Or is more about gutting federal in general, so that it gradually becomes little more than a military outpost?

Even if it is, that’s still going to create an environment that’s not conductive to doing actual science. As soon as you start creating an ideology driven environment, that in turn limits what types of research is possible to do, what kind of questions can be asked, etc. It’s also going to drive scientists out of the US to places where they can do actual science.

Science in the US is already ideology driven. It’s just that it’s currently driven by liberal ideology which current scientists agree with. When you study in the sciences in the US and its vassals, there is a (self-)selection process. If you clash with the leading ideology you will either not be selected for phd positions, your research will not be funded or you decide to leave the field.

This is one of the main reasons why most high positions in science are occupied by cis white men. Most marginalised people will at some point have moral disagreements with the status quo and they get punished harshly for it.

I mean there will always be a social bias affecting science since it is done by humans who live in a particular society. But the range of restrictions can certainly vary a lot, and it’s pretty certain that fascists will have a far more narrow range of fields people are allowed to explore. We can already see this starting to happen with stuff like climate science, forestry, and other important fields being shut down.

That’s true, but I think we shouldn’t belittle the restrictions that exist in a liberal society. It’s not just a social bias, it’s ideology pushed onto us by government and other financiers. Just ask any Palestinian scholar about it.

The National Defense Science Board is under the thumb of the War Department, and all the Trump Admin needs. All other “science” is run by the libs and runs counter to Trump policy of maximum profit.
