Muslim arrives in Japan, decides to build Mosque to practice their faith, engage in charity, and promote understanding of the Quran
American arrives in Japan, decides to build military base to further imperialist ambitions and possibly trade in CSAM
… what? Was some American soldier convicted of doing that?
Edit: Also, a severe trigger warning is missing here.
Some 75,000 Jews fled war-torn Galicia for Vienna, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Another 25,000 sought shelter in Budapest, the empire’s other capital. There they received the charity of imperial officials and private Jewish groups, who tried to provide the refugees with a minimum of care and shelter.
However, most of the people in both cities had little sympathy or understanding for the refugees and recoiled from their unwelcome presence. Soon Galician Jews were linked to worsening social tensions. In Vienna they were blamed for wartime food shortages; in Budapest, for the acute and growing lack of housing. In both places, the Jewish refugee came to symbolize profiteering, criminality, and black marketeering in the pages of the right-wing press and in the speeches of rabble-rousing politicians.
The furor over the “flood” of refugees even provoked a debate in Hungary’s most prominent sociological journal about whether or not Jews could truly assimilate into Hungarian society. The editors invited responses from leading intellectuals and tried to maintain a dispassionate tone, but the episode fueled ever more toxic anti-Jewish language.
By 1918, doubts about the willingness of Jews to fight were being voiced in Hungarian newspapers. Soon, right-wing newspapers spoke darkly of “another Hungary” on the home front that had betrayed the real Hungary.
Mounting anti-Jewish hostility soon forced the same liberal Jewish groups that had been generous with their charity to issue statements to the public reaffirming their patriotism and distancing themselves from the strange and foreign “eastern Jews” (Ostjuden). Their protests had little effect.¹²

Never stop what you’re doing, comrade. I genuinely enjoy reading what you post and I eagerly await your comments for examples of historical relation to current events. I have a few of yours saved!
If only these westerners knew that those muslims are japanese themselves. Thet are so oblivious and like to dictate on other societies how they should operate.
Are these Japanese people commenting or Westerners getting outraged on behalf of Japan? Because recently a lot of people have started to notice how racist a lot of Japanese are based on the things they say on Twitter.
Were and are those “locals” “FURIOUS” about Buddhist temples in the jingū-ji (shrine-temple complexes)?
these ?youtube commenters? have no idea about the existence of chinese mosques or their diversity in architecture styles, how they can absolutely blend in to the locality. (I mean of course they don’t know, most westerners assume that Islam is under attack in China, with absolutely no hint of irony or hypocrisy about how Muslims are viewed or treated in their own societies.)
edit I’m aware this is about Japan. But I would assume it’s Japanese Muslims who would use such a venue and would want Japanese-ness to also be reflected in their buildings, as well as it not sticking out like a sore thumb. My mind immediately goes to how the Great Xi’An Mosque or Songjiang Mosque in Shanghai are styled in cohesion to local architecture styles.
China has a large indigenous Muslim population. I don’t think the same is true for Japan. So their islamophobia is amplified by their xenophobia.
As if Shintoism is of any significance to Japanese people anymore. Everything there is commercialized to high hell (from what I understand), it’s all fake. A mosque would actually probably attract more visitors to the shrine at that point lol
Is it really? I thought that shintoism was a sacred thing that people actually practiced.
I dunno, sorry. I could be entirely spreading misinfo or outdated information, but it has always seemed that religion in Japan is more shallow, less dogmatic- spiritual, perhaps? Not to mention commercialization by the local petite or proper Bourgeoisie.
“Muslims DEMAND huge mosque…” By demand, they mean applied to a zoning commission for construction permits.
