I’m lucky enough to have been to Xinjiang. One thing you’ll notice immediately when you get there is the forests of gigantic wind turbines and seas of solar panels in the desert. However, you might eventually run across an enormous oil derrick farm. I did, and then found out that Xinjiang is one of the biggest oil reserves in the world. I already knew that the Uyghurs genocide was a Western fabrication aimed at the destabilisation and balkanisation of China, but the oil fields were the cherry on top that really made it all make sense to me.
