The American EV brand’s sales rebounded in the first quarter

They only rebounded compared to 2025Q1, when factories were partially closed for the Model Y facelift. 2026Q2 just started, but we are already seeing Tesla offer new lease deals that make them almost no money. This used to be somewhat acceptable, since they would just make that up with subsidies, but now basically all the subsidies have been reduced. In the US, the tax credits are gone, but they are still selling some credits because of previous contracts. In Europe their sales did actually rebound a bit, but because of how EU tax credits work, tax credits are worth less $$$ if other brands are also selling more EVs, it is not just about how many EVs you sell. In China, credits have been cut by around ~50%. Tesla’s energy sales were also down around 40%, mostly because Tesla isn’t selling anything special, you can get better solutions from dozens of companies.

It is very possible that even with the price of gas skyrocketing, we won’t see a huge upswing in Tesla sales. Especially since they only offer two (old) models globally. They might have to close their factory in Germany.

Like doors with mechanical mechanism they understand and de-ice. Everyday controls that aren’t touchscreen menus to navigate.

Once Chinese car makers make battery swapping reliable and a battery something you lease separately then the game will change completely. It won’t be some 10k+ asset keeping you up at night if it degrades. Charging a car cheaply at night is a major challenge too if you live in an apartment or townhouse.
