The Pope renews his call for a ceasefire in the war on Iran, urging leaders to pursue peace through dialogue rather than weapons as hatred and violence deepen and more than one million people remain displaced.

The catholic church is unfortunately pretty useless as liberation is concerned (when its patrons aren’t being outright reactionary). Maybe one day we’ll see liberation theology take hold in it, but not likely any time soon while it sits in the midst of the imperialist west. I imagine if the Pope said “the catholic church stands with Iran, who has a right to defend itself”, it’d have a schism on its hands. Not that such excuses it at all, just that I think it’s already a kind of brittle institution at this point and so statements made by the current Pope tend to be very empty platitude style, sticking purely to existing doctrine as much as possible.

The church has got a long history but in the current century, they’ve almost always advocated for peace whenever there has been a geopolitical conflict.

That’s like saying “our thoughts and prayers go out…”. It’s PR because they HAVE to say something.
