What does blown out mean? Weird headline.

The state’s most prominent anti-transgender Democrat, Nasif Majeed, fell to progressive challenger Veleria Levy, who ran on a pro-LGBTQ+ platform, by more than 40 points. Other anti-trans and right-leaning Democrats lost their own primaries as well.

Sounds like a blowout to me.

Blowout, n. A contest that is decidedly one-sided; an overwhelming victory.

But it was the opposite for the subject identified in the headline. The anti-trans candidate did not have a blowout victory but lost substantially. They’re using the inverse of the common phrase you defined. It’s confusing.

The anti-trans candidates got blown out, imagine it’s like… out of an airlock, or out of an exploding building. Getting blown out is bad, you’re on the receiving end of the blowout.
