my closest brush with being that cool was approaching the end of a lunch break with a bunch of my younger subordinates. we were all half dozing in the shade on a hot sunny day.
assistant to the big boss comes over at like 1 minute to go and starts in with his clipped “ok guys lets get back on our feet” and i sat up and said, “fine, i have to take a shit anyway”.
i wasn’t even trying to be funny, just irriated and mouthy. but some of the guys told me later that summer that they were still laughing about it.
it was a one-off seasonal contract job and i wasn’t trying to come back, unlike most of the people there, so i had a little extra spine towards the petty tyrants.
