Kubrick liked it, and asked Clarke to develop the idea. The novel and the movie came out at the same time. Eventually, Clarke did some sequels, 2010 and 3001. 2010 is a pretty good movie about a joint Russian/American mission to retrieve Dave and Hal’s ship.
