I think the humor lies in the multiple levels of parody of traditionally conservative editorial cartoons. These are parodied or hyperbolized by The Onion’s “Stan Kelly”, and that parody is further parodied by replacing the topic with progressive leftist concerns in the OP’s comic. My response uses an image from a modification of a character from Kelly’s own work, replacing the “sicko” (originally a bystander excited by the decriminalization of drugs resulting in the death of procedural police dramas) with (to my eyes) a stereotype of a transfem furry, further increasing the absurdity and surprise of the entire scenario.
I considered replying with a crying statue of liberty, but this made me giggle more, so.
