    1. Since Majdan I believed that Putin is great tactician but poor strategist
    2. Russian obsession with “patience and negotiation” can cost them not only ally in Syria, but whole Ukrainian conflict.
    3. If they didn’t let Idlib fester when takifiris we’re badly beaten, this would never happen

Russia never should have been in a position where waiting ten years to decouple from the west, or taking tactical retreats across Ukraine was the right move. I do think in context it was the right move, but it could have been avoided by delinking from the West earlier.

To some extent, this may be true of Syria. Better to withdraw and not get bogged down, but it was the right move as a product of Russia & Assad’s strategic missteps. Politics is hard and a lot of leaders seem to run on advice, historical analogies, and this “national interest” view of foreign relations which disguises the structure of imperialism.

Where’s your timestamped prediction then? It wasn’t incorporated into any of the criticisms I saw of the Syrian govt prior to the collapse. That was when everyone learned about the relations with Iran, Russia, and there was more discussion of previously underlooked factors which worsened the sanctions situation like how Assad was wary of trade deals and still courted the west. Essentially, pro-regime criticisms of Assad are posthumously waved around by people who were more keen on defending nu-ISIS and Rojava at the time. Everyone still deals with foreign nations like they’re abstractions or a round in a trivia contest.
