Russia never should have been in a position where waiting ten years to decouple from the west, or taking tactical retreats across Ukraine was the right move. I do think in context it was the right move, but it could have been avoided by delinking from the West earlier.
To some extent, this may be true of Syria. Better to withdraw and not get bogged down, but it was the right move as a product of Russia & Assad’s strategic missteps. Politics is hard and a lot of leaders seem to run on advice, historical analogies, and this “national interest” view of foreign relations which disguises the structure of imperialism.
