For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Asterix & Obelix Take on Caesar (1999), a live-action adaptation of the famed French comic book series. A pair of superpowered Gauls get into a bunch of comical antics fighting the Romans, who have been unable to conquer the village that the wily protagonists defend. Hilarity ensues. Director is Claude Zini, who has made a whole career out of silly slapstick stuff; this is his best-known film. Its sequel, Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra (2002), is better-regarded, but we should probably see the original film first. Big hit in France at the time.

Next is Last Action Hero (1993), a meta-action film from John McTiernan, the guy behind Predator (1987), Die Hard (1988), and The Hunt for Red October (1990). A boy obsessed with action movies is sucked into a film’s universe, whereupon he becomes the ward of over-the-top badass Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzenegger). Uh-oh, the bad guy has escaped into the real; time to go get him. This bombed at the time, but has now accrued a cult following.
