“a day where the goth scene gets to celebrate its own being, and an opportunity to make its presence known to the rest of the world.”
relevant activites:
Looks like a lot of the online events (i.e. twitch and youtube DJ sets) are going on throughout the weekend, and the in-person events have been happening since early may and will also continue for several days.
World Goth Day celebrates the subcultural aspects of goth with fashion shows, art exhibitions and live performances. Many of the events feature local bands, and some have taken on a charitable aspect
Damn I haven’t thought about wgd in years. A decade ago a lot of friends and I would hold events Etc celebrating it online. Back around the time it originated. One of the founders is an acquaintance. Well I say is. More was. Not to go into much detail etc. Just to say there was some relationship issues that ended up seeing them ousted from any part of the group. And the wgd stuff largely ending for us.
It sucks, because it really has become much more than just them anyhow. But you stick by good friends. And these are some of the best. Honestly I don’t know how I got so lucky. Getting to meet so many awesome people even if only tangentially LOL. A number of different musicians and creators Etc that I likely never would have talked to otherwise.
Anyhow this is not an endorsement or condemnation of it lol. Just an old man recalling memories. I’m sure there will be plenty on Twitch and elsewhere streaming today as well as this weekend worth checking out. I ought to check and see if I might still have the last World Goth day set I streamed hanging around somewhere. 2013 2014? I know I’ve got several hundred gigabytes of streams on a drive somewhere.
That’s so awesome.
Drama in the goth scene? (shocked). if it’s any consolation, the founders aren’t that good at web design and their events page is pretty hard to read. A couple online things I’ve found:
- KEXP is playing goth all day
- a Twitch raid train in progress - some of these DJs spend a lot of time talking tho, with varying results.
Heh well both Lee and Martin are musicians/djs. Web design, especially modern web design is an art to itself. I used to dabble. 20 years ago. Modern web design today with all the JavaScript is beyond me.
There isn’t a lot of money in all this for them I know. Martin is pretty busy with day to day. Lee, last I heard he had been touring a bit etc. He contacted the group for the first time in years actually recently. I’m sure if someone who knew what they were doing and was interested involunteering got in touch with one of them. It would be a decent easy portfolio piece.
That’s cool… my first “real” job was as a web programmer back in 99… that was when we’d write perl scripts in cgi-bin directories. (nowadays people are like “we’ll zoomph the urdwad into the brokely service, then… question, Sergio?” / “no, I’m just raising my arms to make sure I’m not having a stroke.”) Anyway the designers at that web shop back in 99 were really cool, they helped me understand the value of design and turned me on to some great trip-hop.
Heh yes I remember those days well. The then wizardry of Java applets. The coming of jsp, then asp, and the first editions of php. And the coming of JavaScript which was meant for light weight client side dynamism of Dom presentation that just basically ran them all out through brute force lol.
I have fond memories of my first pearl CGI scripts. As well as writing my first pages that hooked into SQL with php2. Listening to morcheeba, tricky, meat beat manifesto, faithless, cj bolland, the wise guys, sneaker pimps and a few others.
I oughta find sources for goth/industrial memes. But I don’t wanna look at reddit or twitter even through a mirror, and I dunno how to cross-post from mastodon. Maybe I’ll take a look at bluesky.
