Action camera maker GoPro first indicated interest in public in smart helmet tech in 2024, when it bought Forcite. In 2025, it’s moving forward on smart helmet development.

I feel like go pro created a market and took the top spot then got lazy. Sony tried to get into go pros space but their actions camera never really threatened gopros top spot in any meaningful way.

Now over the last ~2 years insta360 cameras have really taken off. Suddenly I’m seeing news that gopro is doing all these new things.

Competition is good for all of us. Makes companies get off their ass and innovate or improve things.

As for this helmet I worry about repairability and upgradeability. Helmets are generally only supposed to be used for about 5 years before they need to get replaced. Does that mean I so have to buy the camera again in 5 years? What if I break the lens on the camera is the whole helmet trash now too? Go pros havent really been friends of repairability and they still like to overheat in certain situations which I worry will only get worse when stuck inside a helmet without as much access to fresh air.

I can’t wait for this to cost a mint, have a mandatory smartphone app that spies on you and without which the helmet will have features intentionally crippled, and have a battery life of 12 minutes but that’s okay because it overheats in 11. These sterling features are already found in the latest GoPro cameras, so I can’t see why a helmet with one of the damn things built into it will be any different.

This will be a hard pass from anyone with a brain.

No thanks. They’ll put features like “save your recording” or “edit your recording” behind a paywall subscription, just like they ruined their other cameras.

They are the epitome of enshittification, unfortunately.
