Ari has recovered the majority of the bikes from a shipment that went missing in April thanks to the LA County Sheriff’s department, a local bike shop, and tips for customers.
One of the things I’m hoping to see in eBikes is some kind of security key that disables the motor. No key, no motion. The main reason I’m not prepared to spend a few thousand on a nice eBike is because I can’t lock it anywhere outside because of thieves.
I think bosch already have that system where the motor is pared with the display and can only function if the specific display is connected, and the display is plug and play and can be removed easily. It also can warn you via the app if the bike is being moved. Look out for those who use the bosch system.
Other than that, a good lock can go a long way, you wouldn’t want your bike to be missing either way.
Edit: there’s like limited amount of lock that can handle angle grinder, but the one i saw that can eat through the grinder is Onguard RockSolid, expensive as heck but it does the job. Not sure about being picked though. And even then the thing you locked to might be vulnerable. Also it’s better to know the place you park, it can prevent opportunist.
I’ve never heard of bike thieves in the wild bothering to pick locks. Nothing is perfect security, it’s all about discouraging theft by making it a lot of trouble.
My EP2 Pro was like $700 and won’t turn on without a key (like a car ignition) but even if it locked the wheels that would be insufficient security. You need a quality U-lock with any bike and it needs to be locked to the frame. I’d recommend a Litelock X3 or Skunklock Chemical.
They also sell disk locks but they alone are not adequate.
I’ve got a kryptonite NYC u-lock, but a grinder will still get through that.
Yeah the only difference is how long it takes to destroy the lock. There are many places where thieves are brazen enough to use angle grinders in broad daylight. In such places owning a nice bike and leaving it outside is stupid. In lower crime, more affluent places though, a good u-lock is probably okay.
This is why I recommend the Skunklock Chemical: Can a grinder get through it? Sure.
Will the person using the grinder keep going after the cut deep enough and release the gas? I kinda doubt it.
Litelock X3 will just take multiple wheels, but after the first few break the chances of them giving up increase.
I mostly want an eBike to cycle to my BJJ gym, which is in a seedy area. No way would I be prepared to trust an exxy bike locked on the street. I picked up a cheap racer which is more effort, but will do the trick just fine.
Can you bring it in with you? Definitely worth asking IMO.
