On Debian Testing, Gnome 50.5 on a fresh reboot, I’m getting between 1.08 and 1.2 gb usage.

I’ve been trying different desktops and distros lately as I’ve been on Debian Stable for years and just want to freshen things up for fun.

CachyOS + XFCE had me around 900mb but XFCE still being on x11 only is a no go for me. I also didn’t love running arch. Got around 1gb on Debian Testing + XFCE but yeah, no wayland is an issue.

Debian Testing + Plasma had me around 1.5 gb, still pretty good tbh. On a laptop though I just found the touchpad to be fidgety/inconsistent and boy do I hate those menus. No thanks. Plasma is just really not meant for someone like me.

So I think this is it. Debian Testing! Looking forward to Gnome 51 soon! It’s incredible how light Gnome is while being so slick and modern and just really damn nice overall. It’s my fav desktop for sure.

I’m completely tech illiterate and only recently switched to Linux. Using Fedora atomic with Gnome has been so easy, and I love how Gnome looks and feels. I can’t believe more people haven’t made the switch!

I use Sway, and I really love it for the absolute simplicity you can make it. Yet, I do enjoy Gnome so much that I think — pretty often! — to just switch to Gnome. Some time ago, I even had a dedicated computer at our workshop office. It was a low specced machine with 4 GB ram. Gnome was good for most tasks. I have just 4 GB ram at home, and updating Gnome to latest Fedora 45 (meaning Gnome 51? Forgot the number), I’ve got an impression it became even faster! I mean, 4 GB ram, and most times I don’t notice!

Impressive work everyone, I really love Gnome. (Coming from almost a decade with macOS.)

Sway is really cool. I played with it for a few days and really enjoyed it! On my main laptop though, gnome just does it for me. Sway was a ton of fun to play in but I couldn’t image using it for day to day work. I could totally see how people could though.

I love Gnome too. I run it on my daily driver, while using Cosmic on my second computer and KDE on my Steam Deck.

While I enjoy trying the others and they are better (and worse) in some aspects, I wouldn’t picture myself using anything other than Gnome on my main computer.

I just wish I could rely less on the maybe 7 extensions to have it working the way I want.

It’s also great if Gnome is becoming lighter as it was apparently not the case a while ago.

I’ve found GNOME okay on laptops where I can use a trackpad, but I don’t really get along with it when using a mouse. What’s your experience in that regard?

Though I suppose, ultimately, KDE wins me over by having so many default shortcuts overlap with windows. Still having to use the latter for my work, I would really rather not have to relearn and keep two sets in mind.

Same, here, gnome on my main machine for sure.

Wife is on mint cinnamon on her laptop and I have a mini pc running batocera for retro gaming and watching tv/movies.

I’ve paired down to 3 extensions and don’t miss any others honestly. I have appindicators, quick close in main menu, and alphabetical app grid. It’s VERY close to vanilla. Sometimes I’ll turn on blur my shell and change my wallpaper if I just want a change of scenery so to speak lol
