A little thing, but my partner and I got a typewriter a few months ago! We want to use it to type our newsletter, among other things! But before we can do that, there has to be some practice… uh, can’t really post a good looking newsletter if we make a bajillion typos on it.

The method I’ve been using for it is… uh, just “type literally whatever is in my head in the moment”, so it’s often kinda incoherent. Maybe not this time, as I typed this shortly after a falling-out with some friends of mine who showed themselves to me as liberals rather than people I can trust. So that was, as you can probably see, the exact thing that was on my mind. But other times it’s stuff like music production, or typing out what I recently read (like “This Soviet World”, for example) to better digest the subject matter.

Anyone else like their typewriters around here?! :D

Congratulations comrade! I too bought a typewriter from a second hand market with the idea that it is intentionally your writing.

I love your prose and style!

Oh, well uh, thank you! Sometimes it’s hard not to feel like I’m typing like Strong Bad in one of those Spemail episodes of Homestar Runner. Do you know what model typewriter you got?! That sounds exciting!

I mentioned in another comment, it’s a 1960s Brother typewriter! :) So uh, pretty old I guess! I’m not really a super expert, mind, but it’s definitely a piece of hardware that’s much older than I am!

Only no backspace out of technicality. :) There is a backspace key, I just don’t have any whiteout to use with it. So uh, using that key just makes things mush together. You can see that on the page, actually! I make that exact mistake multiple times. x) Def its own skill ceiling though!

As the other user said, yes, there is a whiteout ribbon. I’m pointing at the lever that lets you pick between the three selections here in this photo!

What I aim to do with the third reel, eventually, is to ink my own ribbon with a rainbow pattern. :3 That way we have Business Color, we have Oops I Kinda Screwed Up, and Whimsy

Edit: For those curious, this is a Brother Charger 11 from 1962. We (my partner and I) wanted an all-mechanical model specifically, and we got ours from someone on Ebay. :)

Some later electric ones had a “correcting” ribbon that stamped white over the offending letter.

Old typewriters would let you shift the ribbon to use the top and bottom half, sometimes with different colours, but I’ve not seen one like that with a correcting half.

Recently picked up a 1960 Underwood at the thrift shop; it’s a bit stiff and my typing style is not used to the sheer height and space between keys.
