- Compared with earlier influence operations, these attacks increasingly involve physical violence.
- The threat to merchant ships has become acute in the Black Sea off the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria.
- The Swedish Armed Forces say Europe must prepare for a prolonged confrontation.

An investigation conducted jointly by Swedish public broadcaster SVT and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) found that at least 54 physical hybrid attacks or plots took place in Europe between April 1 and October 15, 2026, which authorities or journalists have linked to Russia.
Poland, Romania and Latvia recorded the highest numbers of such incidents.
These cases represent only part of the hostile activity linked to Russia. The tally excludes cyberattacks, influence operations and conventional espionage, as well as incidents that security agencies have not publicly disclosed.

The Actual Number May Be Higher
The journalists behind the EBU investigation emphasize that incidents documented through public sources do not provide a complete picture of Russia’s hybrid activities.
The investigation’s broader dataset covered hundreds of reports from 17 European countries. Incidents were assessed both by their nature and by the evidence linking them to Russia.
Russia has repeatedly denied involvement in sabotage and hybrid attacks in Europe. Moscow’s Foreign Ministry has, in turn, accused Western countries of waging a hybrid war against Russia.
An earlier investigation by SVT and the EBU, published last year, identified 60 hybrid attacks linked to Russia in 2024 and 2025.
Although this year’s 54 incidents indicate intense activity over a much shorter period, the two investigations do not support a precise conclusion about how quickly the number of attacks is growing without further comparison of their counting methods.

They’re just attacks. Russia is attacking NATO countries.
Hehe, nothing to report in the Netherlands! Guess our intelligence services are doing a great job…
…or its just because our government has the ridiculous policy of not disclosing any of these incidents, because according to our right-centrist government these might ‘stir a panic’.
Please educate me here: why would Russia want to attack nato if it can barely stand in its feet?
My, most likely hort-sighted, thought is that this can only mean one of two things: a. Russia is not as weak as the west try to portrait it. Or, b. Somebody is manufacturing consent to attack Russia “back” and “finish the job”
Again, I am not educated in the matter, this is a genuine question. Thanks.
It reduces the support for Ukraine. That’s enough of a reason.
I guess I see your point: (with russian accent) “if you stop supporting Ukraine, we will let you alone”. So abandoning Ukraine becomes an easy exit to the aggression.
But I also think that those same attacks could incentivize the support for Ukraine. Motivating other countries to work to “maintain the war in Ukraine” rather than leaving enough headroom for Russia to expand the conflict. The rationale being that if things are complicated enough for Russia in Ukraine, then they wouldn’t dilute their own forces in sparkling conflicts with other nations.
Also, it is cheapper for those nations to support a proxy war rather than getting directly involved.
I guess Russia has tried that for long enough and this is an attempt to sabotage the support (?)
Putin once visited the Guggenheim Gallery in New York. As he was looking around, a gold diamond-studded AK-47 caught his eye. He had his bodyguards prize it from the wall, and they walked out with it.
Now Putin isn’t short of gold or diamonds, and he presides over the home of the AK-47. He did it because he could do it and no-one would stop him. This is crucial in understanding his actions in every scenario.
So, regardless of the story being true, your point is that it is just a display of strenght? Seems quite irrational for a head of stat… well, then I look to US and realize that heads of state could do or be anything…
But really, it looks quite irrational from someone that supposedly is “clever”.
Somebody else commented that it could be a coercive action to push countries away from the war, so they stop supporting Ukraine. That seems more plausible to me.
Anyway, thanks for commenting rather than simply downvoting :)
(Allegedly, a glass ak47 filled with vodka, unsure if the artist way compensated - weirdly scarce sauces on it tho, might be just a myth to his personality or a random misunderstanding of a bystander not fully in the loop)
