How do Tags works in a post? Does it make it visible to Mastodon in a way?

Mastodon has ~1.5 Million active users, so better integration between PieFed and Mastodon could see massive growth in users and activity.

My thinking is, it would be great that, if a user makes a post on c/SouthAfrica that it would automatically be tagged with “South Africa” and be visible as a post on Mastodon.

Comments through Mastodon would then also show up on the post in PieFed, and visa versa.

Here is how you look on Mastodon

I remember when Lemmy started automatically adding hashtags based on community there were some objections. I can’t remember the details. If we can give the moderators some control over what hashtag(s) are added that might solve it - the issues raised were something to do with how Lemmy uses the community name as the hashtag and sometimes the community name was never meant to be used in that way.

Something like that. Anyone else remember?

I’d love if I was able to set my community c/SouthAfrica so that all posts automatically have “South Africa” tagged, that would mean posts get exposed to ~1 million users.

If you put the power in the hands of the mods, they can turn it on or off for their communities.

That’s a nice idea, some kind of default hashtag would also benefit c/jeuxvideo or c/europe.

I remember it well, i had high expectation then, when i read their idea and their solution, i was sad.

Honnestly, lemmy idea limit our reach and discoverability in the fediverse. On Mastodon, they have far more users than the whole threadiverse and they are doing well.

i haven’t encoutered issue with hashtags yet.

And, i like that freedom on PieFed to setup the hashtag i like. The middle ground, between freedom and moderation, would be merging flair and hashtag, then come up with a solution to allow user creating and purpose new hashtags. The downside is that you can’t create hashtug with people name as : president, senator…nor add every brand or your new local association.

      Edit : typo & clarity

For example, @Ek-Hou-Van-Braai@piefed.social you can use #SouthAfrica and combine with so many hashtag that will reach other people as #cooking, #photographie, #politic
