Russian authorities plan to sharply increase military spending under a new draft budget, Reuters reported, citing Russian government documents it reviewed. Russia plans to spend 17.1 trillion rubles on defense in 2027.
The budget adopted in 2025 for the following three years had set defense spending at 13.5 trillion rubles. The new figure marks an increase of 3.6 trillion rubles, or 27%.
Total national defense spending over the next three years will reach 50 trillion rubles, Reuters reported.
Russia’s 2025 budget allocated 13.5 trillion rubles for the war, a record at the time. The 2026 budget set defense spending at 12.93 trillion rubles. Bloomberg reported in June, citing sources, that Russian authorities planned to increase war spending this year by another 4-5 trillion rubles.

They can keep this up for ten more years and then… boom. It’s like the afghan war, it cost Ivan so much money that Gorbachev was forced (or at least chose) to opt for perestroika and glasnost, leading to the fall of the communist regime. It will take a while… and Putin’s (hopefully violent) death.
