The “pull factor” mentioned here is a reference to Spain’s decision earlier this year to give legal status to undocumented migrants living in the country. The argument is that granting these rights created an incentive for migrants from outside the EU to risk their lives by crossing the border.

Yet the EU also has numerous agreements with authoritarian governments in which these countries are expected to stop migrants and refugees from crossing the EU’s borders. This outsourcing of migration policy has fuelled human rights violations.

The EU’s agreement with Tunisia, for instance, has been called a “blueprint for complicity” by Amnesty International. The European Network Against Racism has found evidence these agreements also reproduce a racial logic that privileges whiteness.

Alongside these agreements, the EU’s new “Return Regulation”, agreed in June this year, promises to facilitate deportations and expand coercive measures against migrants and refugees. The regulation was approved by the European Parliament amid chants of “send them back” by right-wing MEPs.

Absolutely, the Far Right need to stoke power with Xenophobic fearmongering media in order to both cement their hold on power in Europe and ensure their russian allies in high places have a ready made narrative to tell russians about how they are actually fighting the bad guys who hate the Global South and are trying to push “poor” russia into it.

Russia thus can continue to laughably claim it is a champion of the Global South against nazi “Western” rich powers while throwing human beings from wherever they can scoop them up in the Global South into unfathomably wasteful meatgrinder human wave attacks in Ukraine that amount to nothing… which isn’t to imply the only meatgrinders russia runs are in Ukraine…

In that sense the event at Ceuta was propaganda that mutually served two rightwing empires at once and if that doesn’t send a foreboding shiver down your spine I don’t know what will.

The only people who don’t win here no matter what happens next are the people with actual empathy in the EU and of course immigrants.

edit you think Merz would be left out of this? Fat chance!

The thought that there is no leftwing media for the masses.
