The Smederevo steelworks was once considered the “pride of Serbia.” But since being acquired by China, one study is reporting a fourfold increase in cancer diagnoses around Serbia.

Okay, so while I agree that public safety is a huge issue in industrial policy, the steel mill was acquired by China only ten years ago in 2016. Is it really plausible that a fourfold increase in cancer diagnoses (in all of Serbia no less) can be attributed to such a recent, local event? This main issue seems to be the failure to enforce safety regulations, which probably dates back much longer than the mill being operated by the Chinese.
