I’ve had mixed feelings on this whole debacle. As much as I dislike the Moroccan king, I don’t find myself willimg to support any European presence on the African continent. Even of this is just a cynical move to punish Spain for their tepid pro-Palestine rhetoric, objectively, Morocco is a global south or at least periphery country, not an imperial core nation like Spain.
Also so much of the rhetoric is so obviously Islamophobic dog whistles (if you can call them that, as they’re very explicit) and xenophobic trite that I can’t help but pause at the narrative being manufactured around Morocco.
I don’t know… Moroccan repression of the Sahrawi in West Sahara makes me reluctant to give them any benefit of the doubt. Just being global south does not give them any extra leeway to expand, kill and settle in other peoples lands. The Polisario Front have waged armed struggle against Morocco since the 80s I think.
Not that I hold any good feelings about Spain that is, just that there is a lot of things going on.
But that’s not what they intended here, the people who swam to the Spanish cities were from different countries, and they are being used as a political tool. It was NOT any kind of “invasion” either, that’s reactionary rhetoric coming from Spanish xenophobes and racists. To me this is much like when the US uses social movements as tools, except here it’s not even a movement, it’s people looking to go to Europe for a better life.
Oh yes, but they originated from Morocco no? My understanding was that Spain pays Morocco to deter migrants with (sometimes lethal) repressive force to ensure they have a hard time getting into Spain. Then Morocco stop adhering to this and let people through when they want to exert political pressure on Spain (I believe the last time this happened was in 2019), something they seem to do in coordination with NATO this time.

Morocco is functionally acting on the same level as the baltic Chihuahuas. The only “global south” quality they have is a large exploited population.
Fair, however if the strengthing of a Baltic chihuahua weakened, let’s say France, I’d probably hold the position that it was a net benifet. Also Baltic countries are still a part of Europe, whereas Morrocos large exploited population is better positioned for non-nazi change.
Although this opinion might be biased as I have Moroccan friends of relatives, so I’ve engaged with quite a few my whole life. I can’t say that their political positions aren’t batshit though in my opinion.
Many simultaneously hold the position that Palestine should be free, Israel and the US are the devil, China-Russia-Iran are the new powers and deserve support… and also their king is the greatest leader on earth and everything he does is great. You may think this is odd and that’s because it is.
No I don’t think it’s odd, the vast majority of the average hold contradictory positions. Especially when it comes to attachments to their current form of government.
I really don’t see Morocco actively engaged in settler colonialism and Zionism gaining land and renown, while the mild pro-palestine socdems being replaced by fascists therefore strengthening EU unity and punishing pro-Palestinian voices, is any kind of net benefit. Because maybe in the future Moroccans will finally overthrow their government.
I don’t particularly care about Spanish reconquista holdings and I despise enclaves, BUT this is a great opportunity to highlight the cruelty of the western system and fracture EU identity.
I suppose that is fair assessment. Though I do think it’s still important to be a bit careful with critique as to not fall into the xenophobic “arguments” often made by the European rulers.
I have no idea what to make of any of it. I also have no doubt the Empire is involved.
This is a tough litmus test, but as much as it pains me, i think Spain finds themselves in the progressive side, the morocco state is practically a gulf monarchy but poor.
We’ll see how it unfolds but this may very well cause a fracture in NATO, ive hold the posture that Spain is just rhetoric without substance but this latest development tells me there is more to it, Ceuta is fundamental to controlling the strait of Gibraltar so USrael wanting to take over through their Morocco proxy tells me they don’t consider Spain an ally.
