The fediverse has 0 safety rails against oligarch takeover.
The guardrail is about keeping meta sludge from people who want to interact with it, not fixing the rubes that like the duping.
If you choose to directly interact with a meta product that’s your own damn fault. You can’t fix stupid, but you can contain it away from the people who don’t want to interact with it.
Nothing’s perfect, but there isn’t one main database to control. They can make the independent user harder to hear and to talk to others, but it’s far better than one domain where there’s absolute say on what can be seen and said. The main lemmy sites could go down and the rest would function, and others would grow to take their place. They’re only larger because they were active first and people weren’t aware they could pick others, or preferred to go where most were so it would be more active.
The fediverse has 0 safety rails against oligarch takeover. We only survive here because we don’t have enough users to matter to them.
How could the fediverse be taken over?
Large swaths of fediverse block Threads.
Its not perfect but it is a guardrail, and better than any other social networking software I know.
Least outside of Wafrn, which is also too horny, gay, and furry-coded to be commercialized.
That’s a good solution as well as it turns out.
Had the same feedback about my autobiography, weirdly.
I don’t understand the whole blocking Threads thing. How is forcing your own users to make a Threads account not actively helping Meta?

Huh? Using the fediverse is indirectly interacting with Meta… Not directly.
No the opposite of interacting with meta products would be like living in the woods or some shit. I think of this place more as a methadone clinic.
