  • Not that it sounds like you or your friends would, but plenty of non-profits still manage to funnel absurd amounts of money to their owners. So you may want to lean less on saying it's not possible because of non-profit, but instead not possible due to how you'd run it.

    Notably, OpenAI was originally non-profit.

  • Hate to say it, but welcome to at least the last 26 years of tech, if not more. There was a short period where things were looking up when every site and service tried to make their own free API, but walled gardens and greed will forever put needless limits on technology's ability to improve quality of life.

  • No way this lasts or holds up to basic scrutiny. End to end encryption is a de-facto standard for so fucking much technology.

    Like fucking HTTPS.

  • I was in first year of college, but my birthday falls during winter break. So instead of being able to celebrate with all my awesome new college friends, I was stuck with like one good high school friend, two barely-friends (one was an ex, and their parents were friends with mine), and my gf.

It was... ok. Pretty underwhelming. Pizza and cake, got to watch a movie I had been interested in, and played some multiplayer game.

For some reason my gf decided she needed to hang all over me. Think she was trying to make the ex jealous, which is hilarious because there had been zero chemistry with the ex, I think we kissed once maybe. It did make the ex jealous, and my high school friend got to enjoy more attention from her than I ever got. Cuddling, holding hands, hugs, nothing further than that but it really highlights how little had been there with me and the ex. Still makes me laugh thinking about it.

I remember a bunch of private jokes before and after between me and my gf about me finally being legal, because we'd been fucking like the horny teenagers we were for around a year and a half.

Overall, not anywhere close to the big deal people tend to make it. I honestly didn't remember any details until I sat and thought about it, and my memory was somewhat stirred by interacting with that high school friend again through work yesterday (ended up working for different sub-companies of the same org, doing similar work).

Plenty of more memorable times in my life. Only one birthday is particularly memorable now in my mid 30s. My 21st is memorable less for the birthday itself and more for everything around it, but the birthday is still memorable.

Around 4 months before I turned 21, in the middle of burning out/dropping out from university and a deep depression, I moved 8 hours away from my parents to live with some friends of my gf near her (same gf from my 18th birthday).

During that time I learned a hell of a lot about myself, and that my gf was stealing from everyone she called a friend. Shit hit the fan, a police investigation was opened that went nowhere, and I realized that she had been lying to me for the entire 5 years I had known her.

My world and plans for the future came crashing down and I moved back in with my parents, right before my 21st birthday. I had planned on going no contact with them.

Didn't think I could trust my own judgement due to how much obvious shit I missed.

My college friends pulled through amazingly. My best friend had an apartment on campus and hosted the party, and most of my friends brought friends of their own that I knew decently. Pretty much everyone that I had happy memories with from my time in university was there.

Party with board and video games Friday afternoon into night, ending with our traditional "movie night" of two movies (at least one weird or awful) and a lot of drinking. Saturday morning just me and my best friend, still partially drunk bike ride into town for more booze. Day drinking, videogames, and binging our way through Red vs Blue. Sunday morning he tosses some cash at me and sends me off to the book store to get breakfast and a book he was raving about. Also to get me out of the apartment so he could have some time with his gf.

It was the first book of Dresden Files, which is a favorite book series of mine to this day.

  • The switch supports usb ethernet adapters. Look up the supported list. They plug into usb ports on the dock.

It's pretty much mandatory for any online gaming on it.

  • Then the current companies buying it will just buy more. So far there isn't significant movement in the space to try and do more with less, and the current strategy is to just keep throwing more resources at it.

I'm not sure there's a point where production could eclipse corporate orders with the current path things appear to be on.

  • Just another trillion dollars guys! Just another year and a half! I swear!

  • They're designed for the seat to be sat on. It's not so much the weight, but where it is, like you said. Not even the properties of the surface you'd be standing on, but that it's the part not over anything. It'll cause some rotation-y force the toilet isn't designed to handle.

If you have a ruler that's half on a table and half hanging off, it doesn't matter if you put an empty cup or a cup full of water on the side that's on the table, it isn't likely to fall. Likewise, if you put an empty or full cup on the end hanging off the table, the ruler will fall.

  • Isn't Mint still effectively Ubuntu with no Canonical, and less worried about open soirce purity? Could be wrong, been a long while.

  • I've fooled around with Processing a lot, and have used it and later (iirc) a C++ or C# library many years ago to do "programmatic" edits to images and photos I had taken.

    Stuff like:

    • What if I treat the pixels in an image as one long strip and instead of placing them in left to right strips top to bottom, I lay them down in a spiral? Or in vertical strips despite the original image not being square?
    • What if I interleaved a copy of the image upside down every other row of pixels?
    • Let's just apply random fucking math to the different color values!
    • Let's select random rectangular sections of the image and paste them over the original at a random location, rinse and repeat 100 times.
    • What if I broke the image down into a grid of equally sized rectangles and shuffled their location?
    • What if I averaged the color of each rectangle and added that to the existing color value of those pixels?
    • etc etc.

I'd come up with different ways to select portions of the image, different ways to place that back in, and different ways to combine the "pasted" section with original. I tossed together something like 30 different "formulas", then would do like 10 runs of each one that had random elements, spit out the results into a folder of what ultimately was something like 300 "result" images, and then decide the five or so I liked the best.

Add in the fact that I really don't have any clue how color math works so I wasn't basing my ideas off anything but whimsy, and some occasional pre and post processing with both paint.net plugins and audacity (you can sometimes open images as raw binary, avoid the file header, apply audio effects, and save it as raw binary to still have an image but it often just makes a corrupt file).

Had a decent "glitch art" hobby going to keep me occupied in my free time.

I desperately need to find that old code again. I miss tinkering with it.

Unfortunately, the existing results are tied to a flikr account with connections to my real name, so I'd have to find the code and make more to share.

  • No, that's because the individually wrapped "singles" will congeal together quite quickly if not individually wrapped, and they were developed back when doctors would reccomend smoking.

We just haven't decided to care enough since to stop. Also, those aren't actually cheese and in many countries cannot be sold as such.

Hell isn't bad enough for the people responsible for "American 'Cheese' Singles".

  • Man, pidgin was the fucking best back in the late 00s - mid 10s. Everyone was spread across a handful of different chat programs and systems and you could use one program for all of them.

I think I had AIM, MSN (Windows Live Messenger? I remember they rebranded it like 4 times), Yahoo Messenger, Skype, and Facebook Messenger all set up. Iirc I even had multiple AIM accounts signed in on it at one point.

Unfortunately smart phones coralled everyone into whichever had support on them, which I remember to be Facebook Messenger. Then walled garden shenanigans closed down shit further.

  • While technically true, you have to be kidding me if you think there aren't relevant laws for a situation like this.
