  • Oddly enough, Notepad++ doesn’t really have a full featured native Linux alternative

Geany and Notepad++ are built on the same text editing component.

    https://www.geany.org/

  • I know what Signal is and how it works, thanks. I didn't say anything about the server operators spying on me.

  • Signal Messenger does use Google and Amazon services, so these requests wouldn't surprise me.

It's one of the reasons why I don't use Signal.

  • It's not a bug, but a design choice in the Breeze theme. You can get rid of it by selecting this:

System Settings: Appearance & Style: Colors & Themes: Window Decorations: Plastik

(Or click Get New... and find another decoration set with angled corners.)

  • The only purpose of law enforcement traffic cameras is to generate revenue.

More accurately, it's to extract money from people.

Revenue "generation" normally comes from providing some kind of value to people willing to pay for it. What they're doing here is more like automated extortion.

  • Not CLI. Terminal interface. (Sort of. It requires a terminal with sixel graphics support.)

  • Not to be confused with the MMO ganker hell that also has Albion in its title.

  • I think Mint uses systemd, so after rebooting, you should be able to review the system log from the previous boot with this command:

            journalctl --boot=-1

The kernel might still be running even when the display is frozen. If that's the case, you can try rebooting more gently than a forced power-off would do. While holding down the Alt key, type these keys in order, with a couple seconds between each tap: SysRq R E I S U B

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key

Note: SysRq is disabled by default on some distros, and unsupported by some keyboard controllers. You can check (when the system is not frozen) by holding Alt and typing SysRq H while watching the output of sudo dmesg --follow. If it's working, you should see a help message.

For what it's worth, what you're describing sounds like it might be a GPU driver misbehaving, perhaps in response to power saving events. If you have an Nvidia card, you might try a different driver version. Otherwise, you might try an older or newer kernel version.

  • Xfce was once impressively lightweight, and last time I checked was still less demanding than GNOME and Plasma. I used it for years, until Gtk 3 brought changes that I couldn't stand.

    I kind of miss Thunar.

  • Gtk is the reason I've never bothered to try Budgie, let alone recommend it. I look forward to seeing what they do with Qt. (I hope client-side window decorations are not involved.)

  • More accurately, the headline confuses respirators with valveless FFP2/N95 masks, which are adequate.

  • Civ 4 is great.

Civ 5 is mostly great if you add the Brave New World (or maybe Gods and Kings) expansion, which revises the game mechanics. My main complaint is that I don't like how religion affects the mid-late game, but the game is still great overall.

Both can be had for cheap when they go on sale.

There's a free and open-source Civ-like game called Unciv. I haven't played it, but I've seen it mentioned often enough that it might be worth a look.

  • Appalling? Yes. Shocking? Not to anyone who has been paying attention.

“Before I knew it, I saw ICE agents circling a young woman who appeared to be Hispanic, and so I approached her, and we were at that point chanting, ‘We are not afraid, we are not afraid.’”

Callaghan then said he told ICE officers to take him instead of harassing her. An agent then “came, got in my face, pointed a gun at me, and said, ‘Are you afraid now?’” Callaghan recalled.

After he said he still wasn’t afraid, the officer handcuffed him before putting him into the back of an SUV. “They came back three times and they asked me if I was afraid yet, to which I replied, ‘Hell no, I’m not afraid of you, and I’m never going to be afraid of you.’”

Callaghan said that he asked if he was under arrest after officers asked for him to hand over his identification and his cellphone.

“And then they said to me, ‘Well, you’re white, you won’t be any fun anyway. You can get out of the car.’”

  • I played the tutorial, and continued the game for several hours after the tutorial part ended.

I struggled to stay awake. It was by far the most boring slog I have ever experienced in any edition of Civ. (I haven't played Civ 7, though.)

  • The qualification was established in the first sentence.

And nothing about my comment suggested being upset or trying to force a view on anyone else.

    Good day.

  • We won't know until it's released.

  • The new Steam Controller is supposed to release early this year, so I would probably wait for that.

    https://store.steampowered.com/sale/steamcontroller

If that were not an option, I would pick up a DualSense next time it goes on sale. (Most recent sales were in June and December, I think.)
