  • Well he found out about the sub-prime mortgage fiasco by looking at the public filings that nobody bothers reading. All of the companies involved are public companies that have to file accounts. He'll be tracing what's going on and painting himself a picture.

  • Does this mean Portland should deploy bears to deal with soldier attacks?

  • I think it's no longer riding in the columns of hot air going skyward. It may even be starting it's float down, but something still needs to pop it.

  • Every military ever.

The concept that a soldier is able to disobey an illegal order is flawed. The first thing that happens to them is being thrown in jail awaiting court martial. It's then on them to prove the order illegal be ause the presumption is that it was legal. It becomes one person against the whole military apparatus.

The penalty if found guilty of refusing to obey orders? At minimum (in the US) a dishonorable discharge. At most a room on death row.

I still think soldier should refuse illegal orders, but the system is setup so they don't.

  • I'm not sure Hong Kong is a good example. It was returned to China from the UK in the 90s. So everything since then is "internal".

    Tibet on the other hand...

  • You realise avoiding the anxiety is worse than dealing with it.

  • Global war between who?

Russia has been shown to be a paper tiger. China wants to dominate through trade not warfare. Everybody else doesn't really have an axe to grind. At least, not on that scale.

  • The key point here seems to be the because Islam is a religion and not a race then it doesn't get classed as racism, and that matters because certain laws reference racism.

To me, this points to a problem with our laws where we need a crime to be in the right category of motivation to be treated properly. Why is a racially motivated assault any different to a assault motivated for any other reason? Assault is assault and should be dealt with by the same law.

  • Why is there a painting of Adam Sandler?

  • True, but it's a step in the right direction.

  • I see you like to party with Bernie.

  • I think is less "painted himself into a corner", and more that he's wandered off, gotten lost, and doesn't know how to get home.

  • There's a different between hype and advertising.

    For one, advertising is regulated.

  • It would certainly be a litmus test. If it fails, everything collapses. If it succeeds, ....the wild ride will carry on and won't be letting anyone off.

  • First time in over a century.

  • I think that it's an astute observation. AI wouldn't need to be hyped by those running AI companies if the value was self-evident. Personally I've yet to see any use beyond an advanced version of Clippy.

  • I'm pretty sure it's Fat Albert.
