  • Spin is actually adding words like "admits" to a headline in order to lead the reader to a certain belief. In this case the .ml headline leads us to believe this information has been concealed. When a much more reasonable take is that you, me, and the average reader is probably coming across this info for the first time. It's not been hidden, it's new.

Seems like the take from .ml should be, "You fools, rise up! Your government is getting your countrymen killed in a bullshit war, AGAIN!"

But this headline spins it to read as, "This bullshit war is getting people killed but the government is hiding it, wake up sheeple!"

The first is a cry to come together the second serves to divide us small people.

  • God damn, good catch! Wishing you the best of luck in your recovery and your remission.

  • Nah dog this is just bad spin. You scape goat me because I choose to speak up but it sure sounds to me like you're living in your own little bubble. Personally I don't know how many people have been killed on either side, I've just assumed it's more than either side wants to admit because losing anyone is always more than the powers that be want to admit.

Reuters being about 2-3 days behind the conflict feels pretty normal. But like call it what you will. Maybe it is a global propaganda apparatus... But more likely it's just people being careful and slowing down transmission speed so they can confirm what information they are passing along. Buy you know, you do you.

  • What a bad title, it's not even the one used on the website. It's not like Reuters has been hiding this shit. The US Gov is the one who would have to "admit" anything except they've already publicly said that some troops will for and that's a loss they are excited to make.

Fucking .ml spin. You know you don't have to try to make the US seem bad right? We do it ourselves just fine.

  • We paid NBC for coverage two years ago and found out that while they steam all day coverage you can't replay that coverage. I wanted to wake up, watch a stream that started 5-6 hours earlier and spend all day watching Olympics coverage, rinse and repeat. Instead I could only jump into the stream and rewind 3 hours max, so I immediately lost 2 hours. Then it was a mad rush to catch up to live because the minute coverage ends for the day the stream is removed and deleted with no easy to finish it let alone restart it.

Literally the worst experience. Surely there is a better system out there, especially since I'm willing to pay, but in the meantime a VPN and CBC's coverage is okay. Maybe next Olympics I'll have the energy to find a real solution.

  • I mean, I feel like woke isn't a thing to be for or against, it's literally being aware. There is an implied woke=anti-cruelty, but I feel like you can be woke and support the oppression of others through the power of the system. Just don't expect other people to recognize your "wokeness" or be pleased that you're so aware that the things you're doing are cruel and shitty.

This feels like my step dad being upset that the weather channel is trying to scare us by calling it an atmospheric river! Like dude we're using a fun new term to describe a weather pattern, it just means rain if you're caught beneath the river. Not scary unless you're in a flood zone.

  • We didn't see how we got to 1984. We just see one person living with consequences of what society has become. We're building our own 1984 right now!

  • I feel you friend, sounds like you're a couple rungs lower than me on the "they came for them" scale but the vitriol towards trans people let's me know I'm not too far behind. Last time this ideology crept up people like me got a state sponsored shower.

I'm searching for a way out while building community within my community. I only preach on lemmy when I'm taking care of loved ones, otherwise I'm out doing what I can.

  • These things are pretty simple, two people talking. It takes a small amount of community interest not a big legal challenge or tons of petitioning. From my experience big cities are different but in small municipalities it is basically sharing a comment but you'll have to look up your specifics.

Someone standing up and saying, "Hey, it'd be really cool if we were able to plow the sidewalks and paths so we can walk around the city when it snows." can plant ideas. Nothing ever gets done in a day and it probably won't be within the next 2 years but getting the ball moving now is the best way to see change in a decade.

And on the not getting deported thing, get outside and talk to people like... It's cliche as fuck but get to know your neighbors. Walk your pet rock if it's awkward to hang out without something to do. Say hi to people, compliment their work and expression, ask them about themselves. Then like go your separate ways, maybe you'll see them again maybe not. But doing that over and over helps you meet people. That's the start of your network and eventually your resistance. It's how you build community and community is how we keep us safe, not letting our fear rule us and telling strangers on the Internet to die. It's having trust in the goodness of others and that means showing goodness to others.

But like you do you mate, the Internet is here for you to share your anger, pretty sure that what it was designed for, I could be wrong.

  • Sounds like your city has different, in my opinion unfortunate, priorities. You could change that. It's pretty cool having a city council that matches priorities with you. I've also lived in a number of small towns (~6000 pop.) that plow sidewalks and rec paths along with the roads. Being able to walk around town makes it super easy to go out and do winter activities or just pop down to a restaurant and pick up some food, or get to work without sliding everywhere.

Quick edit: My anecdote isn't about riding around a single town or city, it's riding the 7-14 miles between multiple cities at my pleasure or more often to commute to work at a grocery store.

  • Cold is not an issue if you wear this cool new things I've invented. It's called a jacket! 🧥

But seriously I used to ride my bike to work in a ski town in Colorado throughout the winter. The county plows the bike paths and sidewalks along with the roads. Walking and riding all winter long is no problem on skinny road bike tires. If winter makes it impossible to ride around town that is not a winter problem it's a priorities problem.

  • Honestly my video game addiction is the reason I'm still on Windows. I play league and they only support Windows now. I've tried dual booting but it's just not a smooth experience. I'm going to end up on Windows to play league at some point and sometimes I want to squeeze in a cheeky game during the day and not just at night.

I haven't figured out a solution that works for me yet but I'm open to ideas. I also don't have a solid solution for playing TFT or league on my steamdeck besides dual booting Windows and that's not going to happen.

  • It's not illegal for everyone because not everyone holds a public office... It is however already completely illegal for anyone holding a government job.

  • Proud boys etc are probably working for ICE now. But I guess that's what you were hinting at.

Yeah this is what I was going for. It sure feels right. Fascists love strong central control, I can't imagine Proud Boys leadership didn't jump on being an official part of the US government's internal secret police. And if leadership jumped on board I can't imagine anyone being like, "I can get paid to hang out with my bros and assault minorities and lefties? I'm out!" Like they were already doing that but now it's all official and represents the stance and will of our federal government. Neat.

  • I mean it should be when the police are acting like a violent gang terrorizing entire cities, kidnapping people in broad daylight, and murdering dissenters in the streets.

I wonder why I never hear about the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, Q-anon, Patriot Front, or other openly fascist groups these days? Hmmm... Strange.

  • They also don't look official in any capacity. They look like larpers at an airsoft event... Except that they're coming to kill us at behest of the federal government.

  • They'll make up any excuse. This one is bullshit like the rest but this excuse is one that has been the law since 1791. People seem to really care about it and previous SCOTUSs have made very clear that no laws can infringe on that even when it's to prevent harm.

I feel so funny on this because I want to defend a right under attack by the rump admin but also it's a right I want limited in many ways... Just not right now.

  • Haha, you joke! This is CBS we're talking about! They'll do exactly as the regime desires because that's what they've been doing for at least the past two months.
