  • If a company simply said that their cars are driven remotely by a real person, I think people would be happier with the technology and we'd see such car technology really take-off.

    Imagine getting board of driving and paying somebody $20 in another country to drive for a 2 hours for you, while you texted or something

    How long before all trucks in the N.America are driven remotely by cheaper labor, that can easily hand off to another driven. The truck would be able to drive virtually endlessly between coasts.

  • The biggest challenge the USA would face would be all the sabotage of the oil fields, Niagara Falls generating station, nuclear reactors, power plants, power lines going to the USA. The American army would also be over-extended meaning that China would make a play for both Taiwan and much of the eastern portion of Russian, specifically all of Russia's Pacific coast, right up to Alaska.

  • If the USA invaded Canada; Nato is over, The USA dollar is over and every country ditches it, World goes into a great depression, France places nuclear missiles in Quebec, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and threatens nuclear war, China would probably take the opportunity to invade Taiwan, Russia would use a small nuclear device in Ukraine as he USA becomes isolated.

  • Or a small pick-up with a 200 drones in the back, launched close the front of a battle field. Russia lost much of its navy to Ukraine. Anything large and slow is a good target.

  • We've seen something like this in the Russian/Ukraine battle. Russia's old equipment couldn't withstand modern shoulder fired rockets. However those are expensive.Now we have a stalemate, and both sides are using cheaper drones. Overnight, much of the tanks/fighter jets became obsolete because of drones and drone swarms. So now the world (especially Europe/USA) rearm.

  • 200 drones, each with a high explosive. Cast like a net. Each bomb has a radius of 10ft. So know you have 2000 square feet of carpet bomb, that you can somewhat direct.

  • Let's say that it is economical to waster up to $100k to kill one solder. A drone fleet of a hundred drones, costing $100k is then cost effective. This is basically replacing the AK47 machine gun, with drones that are used like bullets at this point.

  • I don't think they'll be like land mines. They'll cause many problems though. Giving a solider 300 cheap drones with bombs on them, will cost little money. That solders range, to cause trouble, will be extended to 2km, from the 100m that their machine is currently effective from.

  • How long before you get swarms of small supersonic, cheap, missiles and rockets, that people can't hear coming?

  • It's crazy how fast this new war tech is moving.

    Conflicts around the world are going to move to drones, not just Russian/Ukraine.

    Whoever can build millions of these, yearly, and cheaply will have a significant advantage. Will be able to sell them to other conflict zones

    An AK-47 is only piratical to 100meters. It was cheap machines guns that rolled back colonial empires like the British, and French, in places like Africa.

    I can only wonder what cheap drone tech will do to change world politics?

  • This is the problem with creating a meaningful trading zone right now ... trying to get the U.S. to meaningful participate and move forward.

  • He spends most of his time away for Queens Park, drinking at the cottage...and he expects the auto-industry to somehow deal with all the complex international issues itself. No vision, no ability.

  • We really should drop almost all trade/travel boarders between Canada/United States/Europe/Australia and New Zealand. Have one large economic zone. The US and England are the stumbling blocks to this.

  • Consumption is still growing, but the 'oil' in Venezuela is just tar, the 'oil' in the United States come from fracking. The days of sweet crude are behind us.

  • Proper taxation on fuel might help.

    One massive problem is all the advertising of pickup trucks and muscle cars ... advertising works. So many people can only see themselves needing and driving a large pickup/suv or a Dodge Charger.

    I'd like to see an advertising campaign for medium sized sedans pulling utility trailers ... as being macho. It shocking how few people use utility trailers, they are not a thing in N. America.

  • The only real breakthrough has been hybrid, for mpg and efficiency. I suspect internal combustion engines will be around for some time, but almost all cars will move to hybrid (hopefully plug in hybrid).

    Cars heat up quickly now because, aside from the heat from the car engine, many have small electric heaters to overcome the first few minutes of cool air in the cabin and on the windshield. But all this tech comes at an expense to cost, simplicity, and repair-ability.

    N. America really needs more public transit. Better trains between cities. Legislating pick-up trucks so they are safer to pedestrians. Allowing smaller companies to manufacturer cars, to break up the monopolies.

  • In urban environments an old 1980s car is fine, you can't really get into a high speed collision in a city.

    Highway driving is statistically safer, so you can get away with a 1980s car on a highway.

    Rural driving is o.k.-ish, if you are away of your surroundings on a rural road.

    It's the sub-urban, specifically, the ex-urban environment in N.America that posses the most problems for driving an older 1980s car with limited safety features. People really speed on the wide, 6 to 8 lane, suburban streets.

  • The Honda Civic has had the same fuel economy now since the late 80s https://www.fuelly.com/car/honda/civic at 30mpg The VTEC engine has been computer powered for the same time, and has used a Catalytic converter that whole time. Only now, with an electric motor for first gear, do we see any mpg improvement.

    The main safety feature, is that they gotten heavier.

    Something is fundamentally wrong with the transportation; size, power, cost of cars.
