  • Remember, the days of compiling was back when we were running this on 300-500Mhz single core CPUs with 5400RPM spinning rust and RAM amounts in the hundreds of MB.

The embedded system I was putting this on was a 300Mhz single core low power AMD processor with 256MB and a laptop 4200RPM 4GB drive. And yeah, it probably took over a day to compile everything... but it ran much faster than a stock kernel as I could customize the system to only have what it needed and leverage the on-chip ssl and video acceleration support. I used it for a NAS and home server for years.

  • As someone who installed Gentoo from nothing but a Stage 1 iso and kernel tarball back in 2003, this is crazy to read. I was able to squeeze so much performance out of a 300mhz embedded board back then though compared to most distros... after the 6hr kernel build.

  • This Is the Way. Get the farm sorted and you can do all the other quests and actually enjoy all the game has to offer.

  • This is literally how our corporate network is setup. You MUST be on vpn or you cant get to anything. Makes the access permissions super simple. Prior to this setup there were authorization settings that differed between on-prem/off, on vpn or off, which office you were in, etc. now they just deny all unless you vpn in and then it uses your vpn account to validate access there, in one place. Saved a lot of headaches.

  • I would go with the second meaning if it wasnt for all his Trump 2028 merch and rhetoric. There is plenty of context to that statement that cannot be ignored... democrat or republican, you should be talking to your representatives on a regular basis.

  • Add another two zeros and then its a more positive story.

  • Lifelong education based bias and whitewashing. History in this country kinda glosses over the "bad parts" that don't follow the narrative.

  • When I started work at a new location last year the EV charging section of the parking lot was almost exclusively Teslas. Year later and its much more mixed. I regularly see Porsches, BMWs, Polestars, Mustang EVs, and a few Ioniq's and a Rivian.

  • Totally Tubular

  • Momentum and lack of time and awareness.

Most people don't associate Windows as anything they can change. It's what came with their PC, it currently works, it does what they want, the only thing they do is play that game and maybe surf the web... and even if they do know and care, when they get home late from work, the first thing they think is "let's eat and then unwind with a game and go to bed".

If more computers came with Linux from the factory, you'd see a better uptick because it's done, it works, etc.

  • I actually started doing that. It's a living document, shared with others. It's the best solution I've come up with. Knowing whether or not I can convey enough info to make it usable and able to be followed for a less technical person like other family members drives my adoption of software/hardware solutions.

  • It's the theoretically part that i haven't figured out. I know none of my family members would have any idea what to do with anything. I feel like All the Data will just be lost when i go... which is a huge issue as everything moves to digital.

  • "God smites 89 Bolsonaro supporters today." - what the headline should be.

  • Rather than looking at this incident as a huge operational security failure associated with using a massive commercial surveillance system, police see this as something that puts their officers directly in harm’s way.

    Why not both?

  • Also, for many people, they don't actually understand the difference between the device and the OS. You buy a laptop and thats the whole thing, including the OS.

  • But thats less because of AI specifically, and more because it's that governments are pushing for something that the people don't want.

You could replace AI in that sentence with anything the people don't want, didn't ask for, or are explicitly against, and it would still be true.

  • It's only supposed to last long enough to tank stocks so the insiders can buy the dip and then he'll say "after much consideration, we reached an agreement" and everyone in his circles will buy another yacht.

  • The Ural Mountain Range

The mountain range forms part of the conventional boundary between the continents of Europe and Asia, marking the separation between European Russia and Siberia

  • He just wants it ti deflect from the Epstein Files.
