  • I'm seeing lots of reports on this for rule #2, and while I think this sort of commentary is obviously the basis of a lot of political bickering, I'm not sure if the framing in the meme itself is wholly political.

I might be way off base making a judgement call here, but I'm going to leave this one be.

  • I see this. There was another thread today where people were discussing if stuff like this counts as a "meme" or if it's off topic for this page. I'll be making a pinned post for community input tomorrow about a potential new rule. Stay tuned.

  • Removed

    Yup

  • Could you NSFW tag this? Getting reports about rule 4 and 6 that are reasonable, but if it's behind a tag, I think it's fine.

  • I see a bit of both sides being argued in the comments here. We don't have a clear rule about this atm, so removals have been inconsistent and case-by-case, often based on reports.

Maybe I'll start and pin a discussion thread about this during the week (when we'll get the most eyes on it) and see what the wider community wants, and if desired, maybe we can come up with a rule wording that isn't too restrictive, but removes stuff that genuinely feels "off topic" for a memes page.

  • I'm running PopOS and Debian with Nvidia cards that should be affected by this, if I'm understanding this right. Ugh.

    What a pain.

  • Apparently this was 1992 in San Diego. According to the AI summary (I did navigate into each linked source, and they seem legit), this is the info:

It also mentioned two people out of frame on the right, so I figured out it was cropped. Here's the full original photo:

  • I think it's the harsh consonant sounds. I'm not a linguist and am sure there's some term for it, but it seems like we identify words in English more from the distinct "framing" of the consonants and are more flexible about hearing variations in how the vowel sounds in between are pronounced.

For example, it's the same reason that whispering (which largely takes out tone/pitch of vowel sounds) is super easy in English, but more difficult in some other languages.

  • I think it does a good job of showing the reality of how clunky integration of different groups can be, and how even in a future where humans have "solved" racism amongst themselves, it's not a lesson that can be buried with the past yet.

The frustrations that the crew has with Spock's behaviors that are baffling to them, and vis versa, how Spock feels (and frequently verbalizes) about what he thinks are human failings, are very real reflections of how different groups learn to understand each other better. The friction of their interactions is the point, as well as showing that they are incredibly loyal to each other and care about each other's wellbeing at the end of the day.

This is the heart of Star Trek, in my opinion - seeing them actively grow together despite their occasional rude outbursts and misunderstandings.

  • This is probably one of the most loosely moderated communities on Lemmy, intentionally. I have no desire to be the morality or thought police, I just know that a lot of people don't want to be surprised with porn or gore that they weren't intending to see, so sometimes I ask people to use the NSFW tag.
