Shitposter while I tend to two babies. Maybe when I have my life back, I'll help us get a few more niche communities back?

  • No no, don't recommend Linux to a Mac user. Suggest other kids toys, like an etch-a-sketch or something.

  • Hey, brushing at least once a day while depressed is still an accomplishment.

  • Look, you could give me a multi-million dollar grant and I will wouldn't want to work with cockroaches, lol. (But then again, that's what grad students are for...)

  • I've used it for years, though lately more so because I like RetroAchevements and they sometimes require it. Most stand alone emulators do work, too, but it varies.

Between that and shaders (when I'm in the mood, e.g. CRT Halcyon on a game like Super Metroid) makes it a favorite.

  • One of the older social psych frameworks called Social Facilitation says that when we feel watched by others, how comfortable we are with the task determines if we improve or get worse. I'm of course simplifying for Lemmy but you can look to that framework easily.

They tested it with shoe tying vs putting on lab gear, measuring time to finish in the presence of others. Shoe tying got faster while lab gear, being unfamiliar, was slower.

I often give a more modern but dated example as when I play Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2, I tend to choke, because it's not really my genre, but of the same era I tend to show off and do better if I'm playing Metal Gear Solid 2, except the skateboard level of course.

Edit: hell, the Wikipedia article is even pretty good at describing it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_facilitation

  • An analog from education and affirmative action: the arguments that ultimately got it through the Supreme Court was that diversity helps white students with additional perspectives. There was a social justice argument, but the courts didn't care.

I bring this up because there are people for whom these soulless arguments work, and sometimes that's an ok stop-gap as my example allowed thousands of people into education. If it gets people healthcare, some would argue it should be included in the list of reasons.

I'm not exactly in that group who buys that, but I admit I don't know what will ultimately get Americans their right to healthcare.

  • I mean, yes and no. I live where gang tags and random acts of vandalism are rather a frequent occurrence so when I say graffiti removal, I'm thinking that. Things like that only work to harm our neighborhood, defacing our storefronts and public transit and making people feel less safe in their community.

But yes, some forms of graffiti are expression and art. Nazis would take pleasure in removing that we aren't for that, of course.

  • Yeah, somewhere in the pipeline I think they even have NLP so that's sorta right. Ain't an LLM but certainly AI, lol.

  • ... Why not just copy the meme they're referencing? It's like they're intentionally trying to screw this up.

  • Honk - Honk for President 2004.

My other honk is a honk.

My child was honk of the month at honk honk high honk.

  • I think old age has hit me... I do this, windows down (though not too loud) and more than happy to make eye contact with people while I sing along. I've taken to smiling, thumbs upping good driving behavior, etc, since I feel everyone around me is miserable in 2025.

  • Why the death penalty?

Suspected Nazis should be given community service to work in soup kitchens, clean graffiti and pickup trash and such in majority black and brown neighborhoods.

  • I don't really know anyone afraid of transit crime here in LA, but the main deterrent is mostly how long it takes to get to places -- which is ironic, given cars are the main reason our trains and busses are delayed (our trains cross busy intersections, which is insane).

  • Yuuup. To corroborate your story, my friend was making a pitch deck for her start up and AI isn't particularly useful for her product. She wanted me to help her draft some copy as a favor and when I gave her an already rose colored write up, she insisted I mention AI.

I just added "AI powered" to a couple bullet points and called it a day, but she'll be lying through her teeth to get those contacts. Ah, capitalism. -_-

  • Hi, LA native here, and I've driven around there before. That location, the industrial roads in south downtown, the type of people driving there at 6:30am, and this 45 year old guy who was probably just trying to get to work (likely biking out of necessity) makes none of this story a surprise. Even the lack of stopping isn't a surprise as the two drivers were probably also hurrying to work, although imagine killing a guy and starting your work day anyway, yikes.

Search up 45th and Pacific, Vernon, to see how industrial that area is. There are a few places in LA that you can bike safely but this sure as hell ain't one of them. That's not to say I'm blaming the victim, of course, but that there's a clear systemic problem if someone can't get to work safely. Then again, anti-car folks probably already know that.

My two cents, don't ignore the class issue. Biking infrastructure is only available in affluent communities yet many people bike to work because they can't afford to own a car. And what little bike routes we do have (e.g. Ballona Trail), they're riddled with drug users and homeless encampments (at least, in the morning, they get cleared out regularly).

  • Seeing CA propositions get rigged with misinformation and tricky language suggests to me that direct democracy might also not work without proper safeguards.

  • Fun social psych fact: research has shown group brainstorming to be an overall process loss. You're better off brainstorming alone and bringing your ideas to the table individually, ADHD or otherwise.

Lots of reasons why, but you can imagine some of the obvious ones, like only one person being able to speak at once, or groupthink issues where a person or group dominates the process.

  • I found success just saying Alexa wasn't working and a bunch of stuff uses it. Not even that far from correct, at least?

  • Jokes on you, these were actually written by dogs enjoying the sweet scent of manass.
