  • Me knowing that you can't because windows already bricked my SSD

  • As I said in another comment, the reason to not get on their bad side is the fact they're a highly insular and powerful gang that just so happen to be in charge of his protection detail for his entire (hypothetical) term.

It's easy to tweet the truth to power until that corrupt power is the only thing stopping the next Maga nut from taking a shot at you. Whole situation is completely unsurprising and not a mark against his character for me.

  • It's more pragmatic because the NYC police are a legal mafia. Be a shame if there was a "lapse" in his protection because some officers were a little upset at his bluntness.

  • If you poll on actual policy and don't couch it in ideology or partisan framing, the vast majority of people agree. From basic economic policy to abortion access to housing regulations to climate action, ~70% or more are in agreement. And keep in mind this is with a constant media barrage promoting division.

In a better system we wouldn't be bound to just D and R. It would be something to more accurately represent the nuances of the voter (probably an evolution of the coalition systems in newer Democracies). You end up those popular policies as the core of governance with the outer fringe policies on the political curve getting less sway. Compromise is a part of any system of governance except maybe despotism.

  • But the Constitution did set the country up for states to be like their own nations

Yes and when the Constitution was written they were basically 13 semi-sovereign states who were such nascent politicians that they couldn't imagine a government without a king (just renamed president). The constitution should have been entirely reworked after the Civil War and probably needed more major revisions as the population, topography and demographics of the nation changed.

The state of our federal administration is fucked because the constitution is fundamentally flawed. If it was written for a modern world, the federal government would have the foundation to weather this assault and possibly the teeth to nip the rot in the bud. At the very least it wouldn't be so rigid that people like you feel the need to cling to a centuries old piece of paper as infallible.

Using a maliciously broken system as self evidence for its abandonment and prohibition is absurd. There's nothing inherently more oppressive or evil about a federal government than a smaller state government. If you're not considering a restructure to address the root flaws then you're just whinging over which boot you'd prefer to kick in your door.

  • Lol wtf is my "responsibility" here?

That like 3 billionaires directly control all media in my country? That I was never in possession of any political leverage to oppose the oil/pharma/tech/etc... lobbies? That it's completely impossible for me to find any suitable representation in a two party system that has been entrenched for 200+ years? That my politicians have been steadily captured by domestic and foreign money, ruled as "free speech" by a group of robed geriatrics who have held their lifetime seats since before I was old enough to form a political thought?

Unless you're going to sell me some plausible counter history where the entire system was upended, where the fuck does any American's personal "responsibility" come into play? Telling me I should have saved the world by voting better is as big a lie as telling end consumers to save the ecosystem by recycling.

  • Sounds like a good idea until you have a soup of 50 sovereign states who still don't agree but are now completely wide open to international power plays and local violence. The people only have "different visions" because the rich are best served by having us divided. Caving to that pressure only makes us more vulnerable to their neo-feudal ambitions.

  • It's absolutely possible to have a strong federal government without getting into the shit show we have today. The problem is when federal authority gets distilled into a handful of people and detached from popular representation or recall.

"Getting the feds to back off" has been the laughable fig leaf that the right has used to dismantle the normal operation of our government for 200+ years. Now you're buying into balkanization when they've enacted their coup?

We don't need more limits on the only structure that can mitigate/navigate climate collapse; the only thread that historically has opposed the oppression of the deep south; the only speedbump that could even moderately oppose the hegemony of the ultra wealthy.

The US constitution was designed to entrench the power of the white landowner class, and that has remained true in spite of the consistent creep of federal authority. It's just not possible to mount any opposition to the massive weight of their capital in any other way.

So no, don't restrict the Fed's authority to do any of that. Just give us the tools to get real, fair representation and hold our representatives accountable. Every other needed reform and restructuring could be done with no problem once we have that.

  • You can see in the clip he checks his left hand with a lift but can't match it with his right hand. Similarly, he conspicuously doesn't move his right hand in his most recent recorded speech.

  • Connecting the dots between this video and his droopy public appearance yesterday: he's clearly recovering from stroke-type symptoms, probably a TIA.

Notice the persistent rightward tilt of his head and that he only moves his left hand. The uncanny mouth movements people have pointed out are probably an AI touch up to correct his facial droop. They basically propped him up for this video and kept him out of the spotlight during yesterday's public appearance.

My money is that he's projected to recover (they wouldn't be able to hide a paralyzed president forever) but it's another mark against his health claims. If it was a TIA it could be foreshadowing The Big One

About 1 in 3 people who has a TIA will eventually have a stroke, with about half occurring within a year after the TIA.

  • My offhand guess: Netanyahu local popularity is likely sinking, they have to thrash out to manufacture and elevate emergencies to maintain authority and control

  • Welp I guess they were doomed either way then so no need to worry about it. Will certainly be a personal struggle but it's up to them to see past their dad's vile echo chamber, and him being alive or dead won't matter there.

  • Patiently waiting for the shooter to be a hard right conspiracy nut so I can play this clip back

  • Purely from a hypothetical strategic standpoint: Kirk was one of the young household names being groomed to take the mantle of the angry, populist, old white regressive in the future.

A lot of the current generation are decrepit mummies and could drop dead at any minute, and building gravity for successors takes time. Kirk was also a relative outsider as a cheerleader, keeping the taint of disastrous administration off him.

Retribution is coming either way so you could argue the worst assassination attempt outcome would be giving him a bloody ear and a killer photo op. In that context it's a decent longterm outcome for the violent opposition wing.

Of course we'll have to see how the shooter motives and responses play out, nobody really knows.

  • Got a mirror? I assume that was the close shot and not the far video (tho even in the far video you can see it pretty clearly). From the positioning and the amount of blood and how fast he dropped my money is it hit a carotid artery and he's almost certainly dead.

Edit: for everyone still wondering, save yourself a nsfl watch of the front row video, he's dead for sure

  • Your cost per person is probably off. National Guard is supposed to be supplemental, so they call up people from their normal life for higher pay. If keeping a standing army is cooking at home then calling up the National Guard is Uber Eats, not a big deal if occasional but not very sustainable.

And a ton of money is spent on the military, not even necessarily run of the mill corruption. Keeping those giant knock off Batmobiles running daily probably requires special servicing and parts, procurement and logistics have specific markups, long term lodging and food were unplanned and thus expensive, etc...

  • Do you have a source for that 336? I believe that was the previous CEO while the current has a pay ratio of 262, which is pretty standard from what I can tell.

Not that Costco is sunshine and roses but (from an American perspective) they're one of the least bad options.
