  • Which software license for research/academic work?

  • Yeah I find GPL to be ironically non-free because it removes the right for anybody to use the code as they see fit, basically adding a restriction on the developer.

    I find it absurd when people force me to use GPL for my research work and they aren't even in the field to know that adding restrictions on something thats good for the scientific benefit is foolish. RMS isn't funding research or building any kind of quantum computer, it's the big corporations that do that. This is just involving politics in science.

    Forcing GPL for research is foolish because nobody would be interested in implementing your work. After all, it's those big corporations that have enough funding to take up on bigger ideas and research.

    GPL is fine for basic software for consumers and I'd argue it should be used more but for research, its just a bad license.

  • C is a general purpose programming language. People also use it for high level software in certain parts of the software world, not just low level.

    I just have a few more features left that I want to implement and that’ll conclude the development of the core package manager but rest depends on bringing packages into the repository

  • I think what people are forgetting that steam machine is literally a PC. It’s not a console to port something onto it. As long as the game supports proton it runs on it

  • A MacBook costs $1000 in my country for the base model and iPad costs $300 for the base A16 model. For someone who does only digital art , graphic design or watching conten, a $300 iPad is more than enough.

    A touchscreen MacBook would bump the base price of it to more than $1300

  • Tbh I'm going for the steam deck due to its portability and ability to play my existing library. I've made some life decisions that will make me travel a lot around countries or states so steam deck is the perfect pick for me. I don't really play more than 1-3 games that I play everyday and all of them run perfectly on the deck.

    Earlier I thought of going for a PS5/6 but it wasn't really economical plus given my frequent rate of travel, its not feasible.

    Right now, I play my games on a Thinkpad that struggles to do a lot of multi tasking stuff. Its only 2 years old but took a bad beating in terms of performance. I'm gonna get the last juice out of this laptop and continue my gaming on the deck

  • To me, killing off the ender dragon is the end of minecraft but this run was with friends in a server so we did a speedrun of it. My friends are extremely experienced players so we beat the ender dragon in just 4 days of starting the game. We're currently building stuff in our server and exploring end game content

  • Spiderman 1 took me 2-ish weeks to platinum. Miles Morales platinum took just 3 days. That was during a vacation and I clocked in 6-8 hours of gaming in a day for miles morales. Main game is like 6 hours + a few hours for the extras and NG+ makes the game a lot easier + I played on friendly neighbourhood. It's pretty doable.

  • an hour everyday and 3 hours during a weekend is usually enough provided that you dont play multiplayer games at all. Even 30 mins a day is usually enough to finish a lot of games but im not that consistent these days. You can notice the gap between skyrim and red dead (ignore minecraft and fo76)

  • I had a mixed feeling about that one but it was a unique AC experience. Uncharted was amazing. I honestly miss my playstation because of it but given my life decisions I think steam deck would be the perfect choice.

  • I don't feel like playing a lot too which is why you see a lot of gap between skyrim and rdr1. I have a lot of games installed rn but nothing gets finished. I only have one single player game at a time but been playing minecraft a lot with friends these days so thats where my time was going towards

  • That was almost 18 years ago so I dont remember much but i do remember playing SNES and NES games and some adobe flash games during that time. Nothing major happened during all these 18 years. My gaming activity peaked last year. Earlier years, I only used to finish 1-3 games tops. This year its almost 40. Yes. 40 games in a single year
