  • You could compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe by making a movie based on the Richie Rich comics. The X-men get in ridiculous paranormal battles to solve their problems, but Richie can just write a check.

  • Hard to tell what you want but maybe /bin/ed . I use zile now and then fwiw.

  • Robots only half as efficient as humans, says leading Chinese producer

  • Careful mate. Attempt no landing there.

  • For simple cutting I just use ffmpeg. It can do a few other effects too.

  • Try copying the image to another drive and see what you can find with something like ddrescue.

  • Threads is a Facebook thing and I stay away. The tiny corner of Mastodon that I look at is pretty good. Lemmy, well I'm here and it's not totally bad, but it leaves a lot to be desired. Too much duplication, too much clickbait, and believe it or not too much centralization. For example, your reading history is store on the server instead of the client.

  • Did the hoarders miss anything while they were up?

  • Burner phone still tracks the person everywhere. Yeah it's hard. Too bad 1-way pagers are near extinct now.

  • Phone # seems like a scary thing to collect. Also, visiting the web site reveals an IP address, maybe not good. Wonder if there's a more anonymous way to get the alerts out, like if some larger sites sent out alert geolocations along with regular web pages.

  • The Nation can make nominations? What about c/nottheonion? This could get interesting.

  • Halloween masks for all the kids, to defeat face recognition?

  • Why were they collecting that info to begin with? Sounds like asking for trouble.

  • I use pandoc to convert the epub to a .txt file and read it with emacs or "less". There are much more efficient ways to do the conversion but I haven't bothered scripting one.

  • Yes, that's Frege's system mentioned in Henry Cohn's post. But that happened in a very naive time compared with today. So it would be more of a surprise if something like that happened again.

  • Single server PIR is kind of a theoretical surprise but good ways to do it with multiple servers have been known for a long time. See the Wikipedia PIR article. Yes it's maybe a solution looking for a problem, but it's way cool that it can be done at all.

  • There is an MO thread about this:

    https://mathoverflow.net/questions/90876/what-would-be-some-major-consequences-of-the-inconsistency-of-zfc

Basically "our mathematical system" for mathematicians usually (though not always) refers to so-called ZFC set theory. This is an extremely powerful theory that goes far beyond what is needed for everyday mathematics, but it straightforwardly encodes most ordinary mathematical theorems and proofs. Some people do have doubts about its consistency. Maybe some inconsistency in fact could turn up, likely in the far-out technical fringes of the theory. If that invalidates some niche areas of set theory but doesn't affect the more conventional parts of math, then presumably the problem would get fixed up and things would keep going about like before. On the other hand, if the inconsistency went deeper and was harder to escape from, there would be considerable disruption in math.

See Henry Cohn's answer in the MO thread for the longer take that the above paragraph is cribbed from.
