Self-hoster/FOSS Pronouns: He/Him

  • To add on to that, soldiers are also people who have been exploited. They are manipulated so join in the hopes of an education and better their lives and serve their country. Most of them get fucked over and kill themselves. The state is lying to them and they are victims.

  • Yeah tahts all I got from this.

  • The things I do for love

  • Yeah I get that. I just like avoiding having to do boring tasks is all so that I can work on the core problem I'm trying to solve. I don't want to deal with code refactoring manually, I'd rather babysit this thing to do that piece by piece. It'd probably take me longer, cause id do something else on the side that I actually wanted to work on, but id be more content not having to manually do the tedious refactoring myself.

AI is not a catch all for all problems, if I'm thinking something thru very different set of tools for that. I might use an LLM for that but mainly as an interface over a vectordb and help me look things up, and not write or show me any code ever. Essentially a contextual grep or rg.

Sorry you're being forced to use a hammer to make a surgical precision cut. That really sucks man.

  • What about developer burnout rates? Cause those same studies also say there was significantly less Dev burnout happening.

  • Total feelings of superiority: immeasurable.

    Facts!

  • What you share your vague niche interests with the person you care about? Woah slow down there buddy you might need to hold your horses buddy! /s

  • Stick it on cameras! And those delivery robots and around the waymo!

  • Idgaf about how long you supported free and open source software. I'm annoyed by the entitlement of people who don't contribute to the software chirping about how it's made and making demands while not wanting to recognize the work a Foss dev is putting in.

Sorry if I misread your statement as complaining.

  • Bro...

    With their codebase.

Its theirs. You said so yourself. They can do whatever they want including burn it to the ground.

  • Then do it. Stop complaining about FOSS devs using AI when you don't contribute to their project and recognize that they need help and are possibly burnt out.

  • I would argue you're making an ass of yourself by assuming things about people you don't know.

Also I listed out a bunch of things to help out that don't knowing to code, like helping write documentation, bug reports, discussions and just all round getting involved.

You don't mind using their work, don't want to contribute to cause you don't want to learn to code, and expect them to code exactly how you want. Entitled much?

  • Fork it and maintain it yourself then. That's the beauty of FOSS. I would argue if more people learned to code everytime someone complained about AI use by FOSS project maintainers and contributed (code, bug reports, q&a, community engagement) to the projects they care about, maybe less maintainers will be looking to use LLMs.

And you can't code? You can still help! Write docs, help people out with issues! You draw? Logos mascots, things that would give it charm! Help manage the project, help brainstorm new ideas and implementations implementations ideas and implementing it are different things. Test out betas and give bug reports.

You'll learn and you might even have fun!

Complain less and get involved more. Writing and managing code is hard enough.

  • But if you started to get involved there would be more eyes and hands on the code which would reduce the use of AI for that purpose.

You don't have to code, you can help by

    • writing documentation
    • artwork for a mascot or logo
    • answering questions from people dealing with bugs
    • voicing your interest in features and discussions with design and direction in the project
    • helping organize things
    • manage ci/cd

None of those require coding skills but are still needed for a FOSS project. So let's all get to contributing! I expect to see your PR soon!!

  • Very! Now fuck some shit up!!

  • Ask to be paid by the hour

  • Been saying this forever, AI didn't kill the education system, it just highlighted its inadequacies and failure with higher sensitivity

  • Haven't used zfs so I can't speak from the fs perspective but I can answer from dealing with a device with out of tree drivers perspective.

Quick answer, dkms should handle things.

Long answer, since it's out of tree, kernel upgrades should be treated with care and you should make sure that the kernel version and the zfs version don't have issues. Rare but possible. Dkms should handle things 95% of the time. Before putting data on it, try to fuck it up. Do some kernel upgrades see what the flow is. What's the flow if something fucks up. Its better to have that in hand and tested and documented in a safe incase of shit folder.

  • Woman exists, it's political. Cause how is she sitting, what is she wearing, what is she doing, is she doing a good enough job?
