  • If that's how management is, I'm not shopping there. Not like I buy new clothes anyway, but if I did!

  • My ex and I would laugh when our toddlers bumped and fell down. Not at them, with them. They looked instantly to see if there's an issue, "HA! You're OK! Keep going!"

When my daughter was toddling about her great-grandma's living room and would bump her butt, two generations of women would jump to her aid. My ex would be like, "It's OK! You're fine!"

Figured that out as a child when my 5-yo neighbor fell off my swing. He was stunned, looked at me as to what to do, tears incoming, "Come on! Let's try again!" And he bounced right up and kept playing. (I was mainly worried he'd scream and I'd get in trouble, hence my reaction.)

  • I know a guy with monster certs and degrees in plumbing, plus practical experience. He designs the gas and water for military bases and hospitals. Makes bank.

  • Ah! But you're not accounting for radio, then television and now the internet. Mass communication is squashing languages and dialects and accents flat, while at the same time working for archival purposes.

  • Spoken, live languages? Very damned few. Archived languages? We might do pretty well.

In my lifetime I've seen accents disappearing in America. Doing tech support in the early 90s, I played a game of guessing what state a person was from. Did quite well! I could almost always match their accent. (Midwestern was my kryptonite, very generic.)

We're seeing regional accents and dialects disappearing very quickly due to the internet, and formerly, TV in general.

For example; I haven't heard a deep Cajun accent in ages, unless I look for it on YouTube, and even then it's mostly intelligible. I talked to people 25-30 years ago I could not comprehend, and I'm good at languages!

Another example; Go watch Steel Magnolias from 1989. (Great movie BTW!) That deep, propuh, Mississippi female accent is all but gone except for the oldest, and those women only use it amongst each other.

In any case, English seems to rule the internet, a modern lingua franca, don't see that changing any time soon.

  • Investors and fund managers know damned well they're holding a swelling water balloon. As with the AI bubble, they're trying to ride the tiger and bail at the last minute. Problem with riding a tiger is you can't really get off without getting chewed up, hence the saying.

  • Probably blaspheming here, but another show like Firefly would rock. Don't try to catch that exact lighting in a bottle, just give us space cowboys. In space.

  • Venomous spiders are not an issue in North America, and yes, even Mexico. The ones that are dangerous, aren't, well, really dangerous unless you're a baby or very elderly with health issues.

That's a big bitey one, probably an orb weaver or (more likely) some sort of wolf spider. The later bites, it stings a bit, done. The former, not sure they can pierce human flesh.

And what are you going to do? Rush to the ER? "This spider bit me!!!" Like they're going to know what the fuck it is. They'll inspect the tiny wound, see nothing, send you home with instructions to report back if issues arise. Done.

I'm guessing you don't go outdoors much?

  • ...of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Protector of the Realm, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, the Unburnt, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons.

  • No way. People like me purchase a steady supply of standardized machines at a fair cost. Bigger companies than I've worked for want a lease agreement. We pay $X for Y units, you come in and swap them in 3, 4, or 5 years, rinse and repeat. We also need robust tech support, both from the manufacturer and wide user base. No way I'd suggest management purchase Frameworks.

Framework is awesome for individuals as you can upgrade! No one in their right mind wants to hassle with upgrading a fleet of hundreds, thousands, or 10's of thousands of machine. You talking about pets when business requires cattle.

    https://www.hava.io/blog/cattle-vs-pets-devops-explained

Great question! And BTW, thousands upon thousands of those "old" cattle are available on eBay from sellers who make a living moving off-lease machines. I'd never buy new. LOL, I bought servers that way from savemyserver! Boss came by while I was setting up a new server. "Is that new?!" "Nope."

  • Funny enough, job before last I was buying all Dell. Next job, all X1 Carbons and the occasional Mac for the devs.

  • If you watch the video, it's probably nothing like the meme would have one assume. Assume away! (just like conservatives with liberal memes...)

And I'm hardly concerned with watching a video once every two months on a platform that's losing 10's of millions a quarter. If anything, watching while not logged in only costs Truth Social.

  • The studio will find a way to quietly torpedo this monstrosity. Trump's dementia can't lock onto an idea for more than a week, he'll be saying this was a dumb idea next month.

  • This is why New Orleans has the finest food on the planet. All the ingredients had to come out of a swamp or the Gulf.

  • Then don't comment since you have no idea what the post is about.

  • "No damn cat, and no damn cradle.”

  • My IT experience is fading fast so can anyone explain this bit?

block the access of users connected via VPN

I'm running a Digital Ocean droplet on the other side of the Pond with my own, static IP. How could a site detect I'm using a VPN? Imgur blocks me if it's on. How do they know?!

  • Been saying this about tariffs for months:

Say you have cash on hand, or the ability to get a monster loan, to start a factory. You would be a fool to build in the US!

You know the tariffs will be disastrous and eventually repealed, and we're seeing both actions right now. So even if tariffs allow you to compete with imports, the rug will get yanked out from under you at some point. And there you are, holding the bag on a brand-new, worthless factory.

  • a time where search engines were useful and e-mail was perfected

And YouTube was friendlier! Google was losing money on all that in order to corner the market. Now they want paid back. Kinda like reddit losing money every quarter for 19-years. They just turned a profit for the first time.

We got a lot of free shit, got used it, and are now bitching about paying, or watching ads. Ultimately, enshittification was always in the cards. Not sure how we get around that without paying for microservices, kinda like OP is asking about.
