  • Only 22% had non-violent offenses, and about a dozen face serious charges.

This makes it sound like most of them had violent offenses. To clarify from the article:

    75% had no criminal record

22% had "a criminal history—mostly for non-violent offenses like theft, shoplifting, and trespassing"

    3% had "unclear records"

"A dozen of the 238 migrants were accused of murder, rape, assault, and kidnapping."

  • Yeah, I would be very careful how they word any mention of guns. It's very easy to get people arguing past each other even when they share very similar views, thanks to how groups like the NRA have mucked up 2A discourse.

  • For more background, Rober gave an interview and admitted that they ran the test twice. On the first run, the wall was just fabric, which did not tear away in a manner that was visually striking. They went back three weeks later and built a styrofoam wall knowing that the Tesla would fail, and pre-cut the wall to create a more interesting impact.

  • My mom grew up in an area of California with no fireflies. When she was a teenager, she went on a cross-country trip with a friend. In the mountains of North Carolina, they were driving along at night when some bugs hit the windshield of their car. They didn't think much of it... until the bug guts started glowing. Then they screamed.

  • I have never seen a McDonalds that looks like the top pic. I remember plenty with play spaces, but they weren't visible from outside.

  • And now it's gone, along with the expertise it housed from developing cult hits stretching as far back as MS-DOS games in 1997, through the iconic Shadow of Mordor, F.E.A.R., Condemned, No One Lives Forever, and The Matrix Online.

Fuuuck. That really sunk it home for me. Other than the Matrix, I played and loved all of those games. RIP Monolith.

  • The whole point of the Sword of Damocles was that the threat was always looming and Damocles didn't know when it might fall. We know exactly when Microsoft says they are going to drop support. There's a decent chance that they'll push that date back due to slow adoption at least once.

This is more about rats not fleeing the sinking ship until the sea has reached the bow.

  • No, don't use the sexy meme template for this change. It's just a dumb dick measuring move. It doesn't deserve that honor.

  • It's a far cry from this guy's situation, but I think I had five or six bitcoin back when I was mining in the early days. I cashed out when they were maybe $40-50 each towards a new GPU.

Sure, I could go nuts thinking about what I would do with the money now, but if I hadn't sold at that rate, I probably would have sold at $100, or $200, or...

There's no way in hell I would have had the discipline to "hodl" to this point, so I just get on with my life.

  • NC is way more purple than you realize. The GOP has just gotten away with too much gerrymandering and voter suppression to show it in our politics.

And Garner is in Wake County, one of the bluest in the state. If it will happen anywhere in the state, this is probably the best bet.

  • I'm completely self-taught when it comes to Linux, so I have some obvious gaps in my knowledge. I've looked for good write-ups on how Linux folders are intended for use and been unable to find a good resource. Thank you for sharing the official standard name. Reading up on it now.

  • Yeah, it's crazy to me that people believe we were "intelligently designed" when our food hole and breathing hole are so close that we can only use one at a time, and that our waste dumping grounds are right next to the amusement park.

  • One of the many, many different forms of voter suppression. Done your time? Somehow become rehabilitated in our awful prison system? Fuck it, you're still a voiceless space-taking non-citizen until you die

  • If anyone else read this headline and thought about how busy the ACLU is going to be this term, here is the page where you can provide financial support.

  • I'm sure the Dems will get around to round 3 after the midterms, but unless there's a staggeringly large blue wave, it's not going to go anywhere that time either.

  • We're a large financial institution who got dinged to hell in a recent regulatory audit. The pace of change around here could aptly be described as glacial. It was a big culture shock coming here from an MSP after years of Small/Medium Biz roles.

  • An LGBT person might decide that's an acceptable risk if it allows them the chance to deter or prevent violence against them from the increased number of empowered bigots walking around in Trump's America
