  • IDK, medieval period seems like it kinda sucked even if you were rich. The state of their medicine seems to have been even worse than it could have been, humanity had uncovered a lot of cures that were forgotten, considered heretical (e.g. herbal experts, who were often considered witches) or even became extinct (e.g. that roman-era plant that reportedly worked as a contraceptive). And while rich people definitely had servants who cleaned up their non-plumping plumbing toilets, that didn't quite isolate them from the kinds of illnesses that spread when everyone has to live without plumping plumbing.

Victorian England doesn't seem like it was much better, though.

  • Its either “the world is broken but ignore it with the help of a song that has no right to be this groovy”

Also, "I'm broken, here's a sad and angry song about it that has no right to be this groovy". Nu metal was/is big on introspection and personal tragedies instead of societal tragedies, though introspection =/= wisdom.

  • Christmas leftovers and noodles with grated cheese. Definitely eating a lot of sweets and snacks, though.

  • European anglophiles are definitely a thing and it's typically not drunk topless football fans and sunburnt fat people on Mallorca they love. Most of them probably still have a more realistic impression than USians, though.

  • The top thing was also mostly reality, just one that only a small percentage of the population took part in. Well, the streets might have been somewhat less classy in reality even in rich neighborhoods.

  • I did and it helps a lot, but it's not true for smartphones (i.e. a lot of people's main computing device) or even game consoles. Enshittification is everywhere and I feel like it gets harder and harder to avoid, especially when you consider laws that demand that you identify yourself with your personal ID to use social media or porn sites or want to install government spyware (e.g. EU's chat control or what China is doing in general) on your devices.

  • Definitely nostalgic for the time PCs were beige rn

  • You're not wrong, it definitely makes sense to take some artistic license to make it more interesting. But that doesn't mean that you have to completely throw away all logic. Some movies/series are so bad with it that the battles hardly even have narrative continuity, it just completely disjointed scenes that don't make sense. And for the man-to-man fighting, HEMA (which is still stylized, because some techniques aren't safe even with blunt weapons, plus battles aren't usually 1:1 fights) is fairly entertaining while being much more realistic than most movie swordfights.

i.e. there's a middleground between "very realistic but boring" and "not making the least bit of sense". e.g. the Lord of the Rings did fairly well with its battles, they had relatively clear logic and they weren't unrealistically far apart. The Rings of Power or the later seasons of Game of Thrones ... less so.

  • I can believe cooking as a hobby, but not laundry ...

    1. The neighbors of Germany are not Germany itself, but other countries.
    2. How does your comment even refute that statement that you apparently thought I wrote? The Germans who actually wanted the Nazi regime were a minority, though a large one. The first victims of the regime were German opposition politicians/activists, German gay people, German disabled, German jews etc. There were Germans who were perpetrators and Germans who were victims (and some who were both), the country was not a monolith.

Also, many other countries were fairly enthusiastic about the Nazi regime and racism in general, they just didn't like getting attacked by the Germans. UK and France were still colonial regimes, and the US literally had Nazi rallies, still had extremely racist laws (still do, but it got better in the 1960s) and was also a colonial power.

  • Sounds like an aristocratic young woman in the 1800s. A young commoner woman would be made to work hard all day before she is even old enough to be called a "woman". Then again, aristocratic women don't do cooking or laundry. Fairly confusing TBH. Maybe a really poor aristocratic family? They probably weren't all wealthy enough to afford a full set of servants.

  • Then online ads do far more harm than billboards, because billboards don't allow you to go to a store within seconds, in contrast to your computer. Also, lots of online ads are literal scams, malware and content that obviously breaks the site's own terms of service, like showing adult content (porn, gambling etc.) on a site aimed at younger children.

  • I read a blog by someone who is very enthusiastic about stuff like logistics in war. A lot of fictional battles are utterly absurd, and it gets worse when you consider wars, the timelines and distances between battles and so on. A lot of authors and directors who write pre-modern battle scenes just don't care about any semblance of realism or basic logic, and the limited time (and the troubles of depicting battles with living, breathing actors) you have in visual media makes it even worse.

Check out A Collection of Unmitigated Pedantry.

  • It would be rather surprising if Germany was able to "stop the urges" while most of their neighbors recently indulged in those exact urges. Despite being former victims of the WW2-Nazis (plus Italy, which should also have learned the hard way that this doesn't end well).
