self host. you can get great deals on domains and have whatever you want. Hell in many cases you can get free domains with hosting. my domain is a .ca (i'm Canadian) and I got it free for 2 years with a hosting plan that costs me $50 a year. So I'm already saving over Proton, It's local to me, and I can have unlimited accounts and bandwidth. I also use it to host my portfolio site.
Then I also have my own home server which I use for VPN, Backups, Bitwarden, Git Repos, torrents/media, even have my own searx search engine on it.
I'm of the opinion that Apple hasn't produced a good consumer friendly product since like the Apple II or the original Macintosh (debatable). Hell even the Lisa.
now people will say oh the original imac, ipod, and iphone were revolutionary and sure they were but they were by no means consumer friendly. They broke, and still do, easily. constant cord replacements, and computers you can't upgrade unless you were on like a G8 or PowerMac and even then your options for upgrades were limited. Add to the fact you're primarily paying for the name Apple more than anything else.
Add to the fact anything you buy from Apple is guaranteed to be obsolete, per the company, within a year or less. hell at one point they even treated their OS post X the same way.
And they've always been like this ever since Jobs was ORIGINALLY running the show. Remember the Macintosh required a special tool just to open it up, a tool only available to certain developers on the Macintosh team. For a guy that lived his life as a hippie he sure did love tossing electronics away willy nilly.
any company that advertises unlimited PTO just don't bother applying. you'll never get that PTO and there's nothing to pay out when you quit. add to the fact that they're clearly saying "we prefer to hire idiots"
hey I'm all for that but just like for everyone else, where are they going to go? I live in Toronto and I saw first hand what happened when we opened up asylum pathways for people from African nations. they were all living outside of central intake on peter street. and the fallout from that still hasn't been addressed. People did die as a result and many more fell to mental illness and addiction to cope.
So I'm all for it but the last thing I want is for these people to be sleeping outside. We need affordable housing before we start accepting more people into the country. It's not fair to them to promise them a free and safe life when we can't even offer that.
to be fair the vast majority of administration on reddit is now automated by bots. If you've ever been admin banned it tells you as much. So the real issue should be what filters/flags have been applied and why would the bot ignore something like this post/mod?
I'm currently building something with fediverse integration so this is a great idea and something i'll look into. Basically you would be logged into an instance (lemmy.world) and if you're navigating a to a site or even an RSS feed you could see if there's any relevant links to said article/story/whatever back to lemmy.
right now I have a feed built that allows you to log into all your instances (mastodon, lemmy, peertube, etc) and displays all the content you're subscribed to in a single feed. So adding in what you've suggested would be a great feature.
it's not just cruelty it's the subtle (hell at this point not so subtle) hints that "we need to surround ourselves with loyalists to OUR cause, not the country" Because when the squads start rolling out to not just detain people but to line them up on the street probably not the best idea to have transgender/gay/people of color on the other side of the trigger.
the shit is coming, and soon. ICE is now recruiting teens as an obvious scapegoat for one slipped trigger finger.
note that you have to kinda bounce around from instance to instance as some will be great for a couple weeks then go away or crash and then you have to find another one.
Nintendo has ALWAYS been like this. The SNES could easily play games from Japan on the NA console. But Nintendo wouldn't allow it. how? look at a North American SNES cartridge. notice those notches on the bottom? inside the console where you plug the cartridge in you'll see two pegs for where it connects to said cartridge. just little plastic pegs. Japanese Super Famicom carts didn't have this. So how do you play Japanese games on your US SNES? remove those pegs.
you remove those little plastic pegs and suddenly your SNES is region free.
Grok will walk you through how to bypass a FRP on a phone. i.e. you stole a phone and need to bypass the Factory Reset Protection. ask other LLM's this and they'll out right refuse.
I agree, let them generate massive tech debt cause right now the majority of my current clients have hired me to clean up their AI slop.
is it bad for their users? oh hell yes it is. Is it great for me an other consultants/freelancers? hell yes it is. Best thing that's ever happened to my wallet recently are vibe coders. I love those dumb prompt monkeys.
